JOB REQUIREMENTS: Duties CDISs must be able to perform all duties of anMRT (Coder-Inpatient). The CDI Specialist serves as a consultant tovarious medical staff and ad hoc committees related to medicaldocumentation activities, including compliance. They serve on variousworkgroups and teams as assigned. They are also responsible for reportspreparation and presentation of data to the committee(s). Serves as aconsultant in the development and updating of Medical Center policymemoranda pertaining to document function and medical record activities.Ensures that medical record documentation activities are consistent withthe requirements established by VA manuals and directives and the JointCommission standards and Scoring Guidelines. They are responsible forfacilitating improved overall quality, education, completeness, andaccuracy of health record documentation through extensive interactionwith clinical, coding, and other associated staff to ensure clinicaldocumentation supports services rendered to patients, appropriateworkload is captured, and resources are properly allocated. The CDISpecialist analyzes, interprets, and trends findings of qualityimprovement monitors and prepares monthly/quarterly reports forpresentation to the medical staff and/or management. Based on thesefindings, makes recommendations, and persuades physicians/service chiefsto adopt proposals that result in necessary policy or proceduralchanges. The CDI Specialist must possess thorough knowledge of medical,terminology, anatomy and physiology and practical knowledge of medicaltreatment modalities, procedures, surgeries, and disease processes. Theyreview documentation and facilitate modifications to the health recordto ensure accurate severity of illness, risk of mortality, complexity ofcare, and utilization of resources. They identify opportunities fordocumentation improvement by ensuring that diagnoses and procedures aredocumented to the highest level of specificity, accurately address allacute and chronic conditions, and reflect the true health status ofpatients. Serves as Subject Matter Expert for HIMS regarding medicalrecord documentation. Develops and maintains collaborative relationshipswith physicians, service chiefs, and other medical center staff at allorganizational levels.
