  Summary The Medical Instrument Technician will be a member of the Division of Cardiology within the Department of Medicine. This position is located in the Cardiac Catherization (Cath) Laboratory, Electrophysiology Laboratory (EP), and Non-Invasive Cardiology Laboratory under the supervision of the Associate Chief of Cardiology and indirect supervision of the Cath and EP Lab Directors. Clinical assignments will be provided by the Cardiology Labs Nurse Manager. Responsibilities Supports Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology Laboratories. Performs scrubbing, circulating, monitoring, and operation of equipment for complex examination and treatment procedures. Provides technical assistance to the cardiologist during all procedures performed in the laboratories. Independently and accurately monitors the progression of procedures and records intravascular pressures and electrocardiography tracings. Operates digital radiologic and monitoring computer systems. Assists in the preparation of patients prior to procedures and provides care for patients during and post procedures. Assists with training and mentoring other technicians, nurses and students in the Cardiac Catheterization and EP Laboratories. Performs a variety of routine to complex noninvasive/invasive diagnostic studies to identify and record anomalies indicative of disease, injury or other medically significant conditions. Functions as part of the 24/7 STEMI call team with call back response time of <=30 minutes. The Cardiovascular Technologist (CVT) prepares the Cath and EP Labs for diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac catheterization and EP procedures by consulting with the responsible interventional cardiologist or electrophysiologist to determine the proper protocol, ensures that the necessary radiologic imaging modalities, adjunctive imaging modalities, adjunctive therapeutic modalities, and necessary therapeutic implants are available and functional, and has the ability to assist with the setup, operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and cleaning of these advanced modalities, as appropriate. The CVT may monitor, circulate, or scrub on complex cath and EP procedures performed on critically ill patients, depending on the specific procedure and staffing. Mentor and train CVTs of lesser grades, nurses, and nursing students. Assist the Nurse Manager in data for workload collection and quality improvement. Responsible, in conjunction with the Nurse Manager and Laboratory Directors, for the establishment and maintenance of par levels for cath and EP lab equipment. Responsible for the setup, calibration, operation, troubleshooting, and ensure ongoing manufacturer preventative maintenance for radiologic and non-radiologic imaging equipment as well as therapeutic devices. There is a formal call schedule for physicians, nurses, and CVTs to enable the treatment of critically ill patients 24/7. The CVT (and all team members) are required to take call and respond quickly so as to be present in the Cath Lab within 30 minutes of activation. Qualifications Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, to you have at least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) at that level. This would be specialized experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of diagnostic ultrasonography services. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): 1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. *2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements. 3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. 4. Ability to manage and supervise employees. *5. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training. Preferred Experience: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are required. Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) or registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) as a Registered Radiology Technologist (RRT) is highly desirable. A minimum of 1 year of experience with cardiac electrophysiology procedures, including outpatient and inpatient cardiac device management and interrogation is highly desirable. A minimum of 1 year of experience with procedures related to diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterizations is highly desirable.
