Description:
Our client is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join their Hardware Engineering Group in Manassas. The successful candidate will perform mechanical design and component integration for new handheld products, working on a team with other mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, software engineers and project management to meet customer requirements. In addition, our mechanical engineers support our production team through first article builds, product updates, assembly processes, and quality control procedures.
Our client specializes in designing small handheld devices or stand-alone communication devices that require the electro-mechanical integration of Iridium/GPS/Cellular RF modules, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. NAL’s product line emphasize high performance combined with low size, weight and power (SWaP).
Responsibilities:
Conceptualizing and engineering rugged electro-mechanical designs of small handheld and standalone satellite communication devices
Work with the electrical engineering team defining printed circuit board outlines and electromechanical component placements and provide chip level thermal dissipation guidance
Work with the RF engineering team locating antenna elements and providing surrounding material options
Create jigs and fixtures to improve production efficiency or reduce component damage and waste
Support test engineering with planning and executing thermal, drop, and submersion verification tests
Develop technical approach trade-off studies and production cost analyses
Select vendors for mechanical components, custom parts and assemblies. Evaluate their quality control processes and note on our documentation recognized quality standards they shall meet
Generate revision controlled fabrication documentation in accordance with ASME Y14.5-2018 & ASME Y14.41-2019.
Support drafting in the generation of assembly documentation and BOMs
Participate in the CE RoHS/safety and REACH certification process
Required:
Technical degree (BS) in mechanical engineering with 8+ years of experience or an Associate degree with 12+ years of experience preferably in the field of handheld electronic packaging or IP67/IP68 ruggedized electronic devices
Working knowledge of SolidWorks CAD with a minimum of 3+ years of experience.
Experience conducting thermal analysis using SolidWorks Simulation or similar FEA-based modeling software
Experienced in interacting with multiple engineering disciplines, including the production team and 3rd party engineering teams
Understanding of project scheduling, daily task time tracking, and weekly progress reporting
Experience with Microsoft Office, create presentation and report material for illustrating designs
Preferred:
Knowledge of SolidWorks PDM is an advantage
Experience in engineering devices with COTS LCD screens, touch panels, RF modules, antennas, printed circuit boards, and embedded rechargeable batteries
Experience with machined, molded, and die cut fabrication technologies
Experience with the use of rapid prototyping within the design process
