What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an experienced and dedicated R&D Manager to lead the CA Advanced and Exploratory (A&E) Demonstrator Systems Department and provide direction for its related activities. This includes building and maintaining programs in a dynamic and sometimes ambiguous work environment. The selected applicant will be required to broadly team across the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) in various aspects of the product development and realization process as well as coordinate component technology development activities. The successful candidate will also apply systems engineering skills and integrated technical judgment to enable innovative solutions to a wide variety of technical challenges spanning the entire lifecycle of a weapon system, from idea inception to technology insertion and full-scale hardware demonstration. Your job will require some travel to customer and partner sites, as needed.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

Responsibly own the technical execution of many A&E activities currently underway in the department, including hardware systems integration and planning the strategy for future weapon systems and programs

Develop a strategy and vision for the upcoming Phase 1 Program for Hardened Deeply Buried Target (HDBT) Defeat in coordination with partner managers in NM

Help to develop the Technology Maturation portfolio in coordination with the Nuclear Deterrence Program Management Office (PMO)

Work very closely with the partner Advanced and Exploratory departments located in NM to align on program objectives and overall direction for Demonstrator Systems to support future weapon programs

Interact with external partners at KCNSC, NNSA, DOD and many others

Successfully network with all levels of internal management and staff related to technology development and maturation. Developing and maintaining those relationships is essential to the success of the Advanced and Exploratory departments

  Qualifications We Require:

Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in relevant technical field plus (5) or more years of experience, or combination of equivalent education and experience

Experience with nuclear weapon component or system design, development, qualification, production, and/or surveillance

Three or more years of proven leadership experience of large, complex programs or management

  Active DOE Q-level security clearance

Ability to acquire and maintain SCI clearance, and special program security clearances

  Qualifications We Desire:

Experience in systems engineering of complex systems

Demonstrated experience communicating high level technical and programmatic briefings

Demonstrated ability to understand and work with a diverse set of technologies

Desire and motivation to shape the future of the ND mission area at Sandia

Ability to apply strong interpersonal and communications skills while working with a multi-disciplinary team

Strong written and verbal communication skill

The ability to perform in a highly collaborative and teaming environment with peers and customers

  About Our Team:

The Advanced and Exploratory Technology Acceleration and Systems Concepts group is responsible for providing system-level leadership for advanced and exploratory activities across the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE). The departments are pursuing numerous laboratory wide activities to advance technologies and concepts to meet future National nuclear deterrent needs. These activities include, but are not limited to, development of weapon system concepts and architecture designs with features resilient to future threat environment uncertainty, partnering with the intelligence and systems analysis community, the exploration of system integration options, and development of physical and functional demonstration test units for future systems. These departments serve as the main point of communication to LLNL as well as the Air Force with respect to Future System design and development, while also maintaining key collaborations around the NSE, such as KCNSC, LANL, Pantex, Y-12, STRATCOM, and intelligence partners.

  Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

  Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

  EEO:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

  NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
