Key Responsibilities
Drive AI-powered research and innovation related to Electric Drive Units for Automotive applications, aligned with the GKN Automotive Innovation strategy
Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to conceptualise, design, develop, and deploy machine learning solutions tailored to e-powertrain systems
Apply proficiency in high level mathematical languages like Python to develop machine learning algorithms and models
Process and analyse large datasets to create innovative solutions
Stay up to date with the latest advancements, trends and best practices in AI and machine learning and define new areas of focus
Produce technical reports and other engineering related documentation
Support research activities in the Automotive Advanced Research Centre (AARC), our partnership with the University of Nottingham and Newcastle University
Support IP capture and Patent Applications, where appropriate
Prepare papers and presentations to GKN stakeholders on the progress and conclusions of research
Essential Qualifications & Experience
Degree / PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, or a related field
3+ years as a Machine Learning engineer or similar
Extensive experience in machine learning, including deep learning and reinforcement learning
High level competency in mathematics, including digital signal processing, stochastic processes and linear algebra
Experience in linear regression, classification and decision trees
Proficient in Python programming
Understanding of object-oriented programming principles
Working knowledge of PyTorch, TensorFlow and other relevant tools
High-level analytical capability to facilitate conceptual thinking, problem-solving and innovation
Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams
Ability to share technical knowledge effectively with others, coach and guide as appropriate
Desired Experience
An understanding of automotive mechatronics systems
Familiarity with large language models, such as Chat GPT, and the ability to use them effectively to extract data
Programming in C
Experience of Matlab & Simulink (including auto coding)
