Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surroundingareas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes membersafety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.Essential Functions: Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area.Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergencysituations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members,participants and other staff. Knows, understands, and consistentlyapplies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquaticarea. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or thestate Health Department code. Performs equipment checks and ensuresappropriate equipment is available as needed. Checks the pool forhazardous conditions when arriving. Performs chemical testing duringnon-active guarding at appropriate times of the day, as required, andtakes appropriate action. Performs pool area cleaning as required.Maintains required certifications. Attends staff meetings and trainings.Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, includingemergency and safety procedures. Completes reports as necessary. Otherduties as assigned. Certifications: YMCALifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding and obtain YMCA Lifeguardingwithin 60 days of hire, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and BasicFirst Aid. Oxygen Administration certification required within 30 daysof hire. Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mentalreadiness. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCAstandards. Physical Demands: Ability to pass lifeguard water test. Mustbe able to remain alert. Must be able to sit or stand for extendedperiods. Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distresssignals. Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clearvision. Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for awater rescue. Ability to communicate verbally, including projectingvoice across distance in normal and loud situations.
