  Position Summary:The Institute of Northern Engineering (INE) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) seeks applicants for a term funded position in a broad range of science and engineering research areas involving the application of a new Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (Analytik Jena PlasmaQuant MS Elite S) that was recently funded (Fall 2023) by the State of Alaska for Critical Minerals research. This position will involve establishing the state-of-the-art LA-ICP-MS instrumentation as an expansion of the INE at UAF into a renovated, dedicated and purpose-designed LA-ICP-MS laboratory. Instrument installation is scheduled for Spring 2024 with the term funded position to be filled in time to lead the installation and setup.

  INE is establishing a Critical Minerals Separations Laboratory focused on the concentration and recovery of critical minerals using funding provided by the Governor's office. The goal is to meet the critical minerals needs of the nation and to support the mining economy of the state of Alaska. This position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of a LA-ICP-MS that will support that activity as well as research throughout the UA system and other state and federal agencies.

  To thrive in this position, the applicant should have good interpersonal skills in addition to strong technical skills. This includes working with researchers, other agencies such and US DOE, EPA, Alaska DEC, Alaska DGGS, etc.

  The applicant will be working with graduate students. As such, the applicant should have good teaching and mentorship skills.

  In addition, the applicant should have good organizational skills, including scheduling, sample tracking, maintenance of test results,

  Minimum Qualifications:

  Master's degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Analytical Chemistry, Geochemistry, Biogeochemistry, or a similar related field or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Publication record demonstrating expertise. Should have chemical hygiene/lab safety training beyond what is standard for UAF employees. Must be capable of effectively communicating with researchers from diverse scientific and engineering backgrounds. Must be able to multi-task within a very complex spectrum of research protocols.

  At least 3 to 5 years of experience working in an analytical (geo)chemistry Lab.

  Position Details:

  This position is located on the Troth Yeddha' campus in Fairbanks, Alaska. This is a full-time, term-funded, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package (https://www.alaska.edu/hr/benefits/support/prospectiveemployees.php) . UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage.
