General Statement of Duties:
The Part Time Class 3 Public Works Laborer is responsible for the general maintenance and repair of all public streets, city vehicles and equipment, parks and other properties of public trust. Assists other Municipal Services Department functions and operations, including on-call duty.
Distinguishing Features of the Position:
This is a Safety Sensitive Position, requires flexibility in skill sets, job assignment and applied time. This position is appointed by the Public Works Supervisor and reports to the Public Works Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor.
Examples of work (illustrative only):
Mowing, weed whacking; weed pulling; garbage collection; painting; sweeping; washing/cleaning trucks, pothole patching; snow removal; de-icing; brush, leaf, and Christmas tree collection.
Infrastructure Maintenance:
Performs department functions and operations, including but not limited to: Lawn care, street maintenance operations; snow removal; de-icing; traffic control; general maintenance operations.Performs crack sealing, full depth hot/cold patching or pothole filling.Equipment Operation:
Operates weed whacker, shovel, broom, backpack blower, leaf sucker, chipper, power wash/jets and any other qualified equipment and vehicles i.e., pickup trucks and T-Tag dump trucks, etc.Miscellaneous:
Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and will be subject to random testing.Periodically assists with the general repair and maintenance of department equipment and vehicles.Must pass a pre-employment background check.Responsible for performing lawn/tree care and maintenance.Properly uses and maintains safety equipment provided/required such as hard hat, safety vest, and other PPE to complete assigned tasks.Maintains a courteous, friendly, and helpful working relationship with co-workers, citizens, and public officials.Performs other tasks as assigned.All employees of the City of Sunbury are required to execute, and abide by the terms of, an Employee Discipline document.Required Knowledge, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to function safely and efficiently as a team player.Ability to speak, read, write, and comprehend the English language.If not already qualified, ability and willingness to acquire PA driver's License within 90 days of employment.Ability and Knowledge for safe operation of lawn tractor, pickup while towing a trailer, T-Tag dump trucks and other basic level tools, equipment and vehicles used by Public Works Department within 90 days of employment.Ability and willingness to stay current with advanced technology through employer provided training and/or formal classes.Ability to accurately use a measuring tape.Ability to use small tools, including power tools.High school diploma or equivalent is not required, however obtaining diploma or equivalent is highly encouraged.As all positions at the Department of Public Works are "on call", all employees must provide a means in which your supervisor can contact you when you are not working, i.e., cell phone or home phone.Work Environment:
Working outside in the elements such as heat, cold, rain, snow, and sun. Potential for high levels of pollen, dust and other irritants typical with outdoor conditions and large maintenance garages. Potential to work at night during blizzard like conditions. Standing, lifting, walking, and working around or within moving traffic. Working in a large maintenance shop with running equipment, loud noise, and hazardous or flammable chemicals. Work in confined spaces.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands and arms, to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, utilize weed whacker for extended periods of time. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, and talk or hear. The employee may be required to lift, pull and/or move 50 pounds for extended periods. Must occasionally lift, pull and/or move 100 pounds with mechanical and/or physical assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be capable of periodic heavy stretching and pulling for extended periods of time.
Expected Hours Worked, and Benefits:
Standard schedule is weekdays, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with ½ unpaid lunch per day however you may be called upon to work outside your normal scheduled hours or additional hours as needed. Time will vary from 0 to 39 hours per week as needed. No additional benefits are offered with this position.
