  Description

  The Laboratory Operations Specialist is responsible for providing support for various departments throughout the laboratory (Chemistry, Microbiology and Pathology). While maintaining job functions, the Laboratory Operations Specialist Float is to progress in their learning of industry regulations (CAP, COLA,CLIA). The position encompasses processing a multitude of tasks such as performing equipment maintenance checks, handling information from Customer Service and laboratory personnel, changing equipment solutions, specimen matching, ensuring the correct cases are sorted, processing specimens, performing various clerical functions and identifying/communicating any issues they identify to their supervisor.

  General Duties:

  Shift: M-F 12-8pm, however, on occasion there may be some weekend shifts

  Processing Specimens:

  Performs the patient’s diagnostic test in a friendly and efficient manner, while still providing exceptional care. Ensures all test are performed and resulted on the correct patient.

  Receiving and plating cultures in a friendly and efficient manner, while still providing exceptional care.

  Handles, prepares and loads stainers; conducts dehydrating and coverslips slides utilizing manual or automatic systems.

  Grossing of formalin fixed tissues in preparation for processing and microtomy.

  Routinely checks and verifies that patient specimens match the correct supplies and are all labeled correctly.

  Responsible for filing, tracking, retrieval and accurate record keeping.

  Logs appropriate information into the LIS. Verifies match of case numbers.

  Ensures internal documentation is scanned and current with respect to all send out materials.

  Quality Assurance:

  Maintains the equipment and performs all QC and QA testing and maintenance as prescribed on the log sheets.

  Reports all quality occurrences to respective lead/supervisor in compliance with departmental Quality Plan; assists in documentation of all quality occurrences.

  Troubleshooting and Problem Solving:

  The Laboratory Operations Specialist is responsible for solving numerous problems that include but not limited to:

  Sample, system and process issues raised by staff, customers, or other individuals.

  Identifies errors that impede productivity and develops ways to solve them.

  Patient’s specimen and requisition are received in the lab, but no orders are in the lab LIS system.

  Patient specimen is received in the lab with no requisition and no orders in the LIS system.

  Dealing with doctors or nurses when problems arise.

  Plant and Equipment:

  Responsible for appearance of the lab. Prepares, cleans, sterilizes, and maintains laboratory equipment and accessories as required. The Department is expected to appear tidy by the end of the day.

  Work is performed in accordance with established procedures and by using independent judgment and discretion. The Laboratory Technologist is expected to analyze any testing data obtained in the lab and ensure that the correct results are reported to the physician. They should be able to handle complaints and determine proper courses of action to take.

  Reviews all procedure manuals annually or when changes occur in a timely manner when assigned.

  Education: Must have an AS or BS degree or HS Diploma or GED with a minimum of 24 hours of college science courses

  Required Proficiencies or Specialized Knowledge:

  Maintains an understanding of the latest techniques and guidelines in the lab.

  Must have a basic knowledge of the rules and regulations that the laboratory is governed under.

  Must have interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, co-workers, and others.

  Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook and general working knowledge of the internet for business use.

  Certifications: ASCP, MT or MLT is preferred
