  Knife Grinder

  Interfor is seeking energetic and enthusiastic team players to join our team as a Knife Grinder in Georgetown, South Carolina. Starting rate for this position is $23.69 per hour.

  What You’ll Do

  Positions and secures work piece or sheet stock, template, and machine accessories onto machine, using hand tools.

  Turns hand wheels to set travel and pressure of cutter head or knife stock across or against grinding wheel to shape or sharpen work piece.

  Starts machine and observes grinding operation to verify conformance to specifications.

  May cut out plastic templates used to fabricate knives and cutter heads.

  May hone cutting edge of ground knives, using whetstone and oil.

  May cut and grind silicon carbide joining stones to match pattern of knives.

  May select and install grinding wheels on machine, using hand tools, applying knowledge of product specifications and abrasives.

  May manipulate blade across grinding wheel by hand.

  May turn valve to control flow of coolant.

  May sharpen bits and boring tool.

  Changes knives used in chipper machines that reduce pulpwood to chips.

  Dismantles machine, using hooks and chain hoist.

  Inspects blades, and remove defective blades with hand tools.

  Removes chips collected between blade and disk wheel, using air hose.

  Bolts new blades in machine, using fixed gauge to obtain accurate settings.

  Files knife blades.

  Physical Requirements: Walking, Stairs, Bending and Lifting (Up to 50 lbs).

  What You Offer

  Knowledge of tools, materials, methods, and standard practices of the knife grinder’s trade.

  The hazards and safety precautions of the knife grinder’s trade.

  Ability to learn job-related material primarily through oral instructions and observation. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.

  3-5 years in lumber operations.

  High School education or GED equivalent preferred.
