The Public Works Transportation Planning division is seeking four non-benefit earning interns to be a part of their team. These positions will be supporting multiple areas in our Transportation Planning division from crash data analysis to vehicle, bike, and pedestrian count data, and ArcGIS mapping that Transportation Engineers and Planners rely on when making engineering decisions. Location and hours: These positions are hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Public Works Facility located at 1600 Prairie Drive in Medina, MN 55340 or the 701 building located at 701 South 4th Avenue, Minneapolis MN 55415, and remote as job duties require. The Public Works Facility in Medina is not accessible by public transportation. These positions will start in May and last until August or up to 13 weeks with flexible start and end dates. Interns are scheduled to work hours 40 hours per week with some flexibility on work schedules. While these positions are designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in Minnesota or Wisconsin. About these position types: These positions are limited duration, non-benefit earning internships. These positions are internally classified as an Intern II. The responsibilities of each position include but are not limited to the following: Transportation Safety Initiative team: Hybrid The proposed work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. 5 p.m. The preferred candidate will have a strong interest in transportation safety programs and policies. The Transportation Safety intern will be responsible for the following tasks: Contributing toward the development of the county s Toward Zero Deaths Action Plan. Researching low-cost, high-impact safety improvements that can be utilized across the county to improve safety for all road users. Participating in Speed Analysis Study to determine where excessive speeding is frequent on county roadways and collaborate on interventions to promote safer speeds. Conduct data analysis, create crash diagrams and contribute toward before-and-after research involving transportation safety in Hennepin County. Participate in in-person or virtual public engagement activities to hear residents' feedback about using the roads and to promote safety for all road users in Hennepin County. Transportation Complete and Green Streets team: The proposed work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The preferred candidate will have a strong interest in transportation and Complete and Green Streets programs and policies. The Transportation Complete and Green Streets intern will be responsible for the following tasks: Assisting with the development of Complete and Green Streets performance metrics. Assisting with tracking project metrics. Assisting with development of Complete and Green Streets Data Dashboard. Researching Complete and Green Streets planning and design best practices to improve roadways for all users. Transportation Pedestrian team: The proposed work schedule is Monday through Friday 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The preferred candidates will have a strong interest in transportation engineering. The Transportation Pedestrian team intern will be responsible for the following tasks: Analyzing and reporting on Americans with Disability (ADA) data. Conducting basic analysis in ArcGIS. Analyzing and developing prioritization. Field data collection. Transportation Data Collection team: The proposed work schedule is Monday through Friday 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. The preferred candidates will have a strong interest in transportation engineering with experience using small tools (including a hammer and power drill) and will spend time working outdoors. The Transportation Data Collection team intern will be responsible for the following tasks: Deploying portable counting equipment along Hennepin County roadways to collect pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle data. Following best practices in safety whenever working in the roadway. Performing data and video analysis to develop metrics and reports. Uploading new count data to the county's online Multimodal Counts Map using ArcGIS. Performing routine equipment maintenance.
