  Middle School Special Education Teacher (2023-2024)

  Freire Charter Middle School is currently seeking a Special Education teacher for the current 2023-2024 school year. Freire Charter Middle School staff members are forward-thinking team players passionate about working with and unleashing the potential of urban youth. We seek candidates who embody our guiding principles - collaboration, trust, whatever it takes, students first, real, safe, integrity, and love.

  Responsibilities

  Compliance:

  Familiarize yourself with IEPs and evals of all students on caseload, know their history, goals, accommodations, and specially designed instructionSchedule all IEP meetings in complianceModify IEP draft to reflect current needs before meetingsCollaborate with school psychologist for any students being evaluatedConduct ongoing progress monitoring, complete progress monitoring reports each quarterAttend all IEP meetingsWrite, facilitate and implement PBSPsFile Compliance ensure signatures, teacher input, paperwork is setGather teacher input for progress monitoring

  Manage caseload:

  Set up system to routinely monitor student grades and progressSet up system to ensure student comprehension of curriculum materialMake proactive remediation plans for struggling students early in the quarter that involves parent, teachers, student, and dean/academic heads

  Collaborate:

  Collaborate with grade level team daily/weekly/bi-weeklyCollaborate with co-teachers daily/weekly to plan effective lessonsModify all materials for major assignments and assessments in advance of teacher distributing to classModify gradebooks bi-monthlyWork with teachers, deans, school heads on PBSPs, behavior strategies

  Schedule/Instructional Duties:

  Daily Co-TeachingTransitions lessons implementedSupport FacilitationPull-Outs & Direct Instruction based on student need

  Document/Conduct Outreach

  Documentation in Frontline All parent contact, all student check insRegularly communicate with parents/guardians (weekly)

  Qualifications

  Successful candidates will have the following attributes:At least 2 years of previous successful experience working with diverse student populationsAppropriate PA certification or willingness to pursue alternative certificationPositive attitude, sense of humor, and willingness to do whatever it takes to get a job doneAbility to work well individually and as part of a team

This past year, Freire Middle School received Great Philly Schools 2020 High Growth Rating for demonstrating impressive academic growth over a three-year period in math and reading. In 2018-19 (the last year for which there are test results due to COVID-19), Freire Middle School ranked #4 out of all public Philadelphia middle schools on the School District of Philadelphia's annual School Progress Report. That year, Freire Middle School received a Progress score of 100% for the third consecutive year.

  FCMS educators teach every single day with urgency, zeal, and compassion because every minute matters. FCMS is committed to supporting the entire student - academically, behaviorally, and emotionally.
