About High School SRAP- Marine Technology [Summer]

Overview

The Coastal Sciences Division, headquartered at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Sequim Campus on Washington State's Olympic Peninsula, is the Department of Energy's only marine research science laboratory (MSL). This unique facility and the capabilities of its researchers deliver science and technology that is critical to the nation's energy, environmental and security future.

Building upon a history of research related to marine and coastal resources, environmental chemistry, water resources modeling, engineering and biotechnology—and more recently, national and homeland security—the MSL is emerging as a leader in these three areas:

Enabling sustainable development of ocean energy

Understanding and mitigating long-term impacts of human activities and extreme events on marine resources

Protecting coastal environments from security threats

Responsibilities

The Coastal Sciences Division is seeking a high school to intern and assist on the Great Lakes Avian Monitoring project. This is a research-based educational experience and is STEM focused. The activities that the intern will contribute to is hardware and software integration of a mobile radar sensing platform used to detect birds in flight. Specifically, the intern could be included in tasks related to the robotics, mechatronics, and automation of the mobile radar platform. A systems engineering approach will be taken where hands on work will be done on the physical components of the mobile radar platform and desktop-based signal processing associated with radar’s position sensors which assist with the system’s robotics.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a high school senior for intern assignments within the Student Research Apprenticeship Program (SRAP). This summer internship is a research-based experience for students who are sophomores, juniors or seniors interested in science and engineering. SRAP is a 10-week program, estimated based on start date; the anticipated start date for summer cohort will be June 17, 2025.
