  POSITION SUMMARY

  Repairs and maintains various types of heavy equipment, small equipment, and winter operations equipment.

  Department : Public Works, Bureau of Operations

  Posting Type : Announcement/Bid

  Salary : $27.15 per hour.

  Union : This position is included in the Pittsburgh Joint Collective Bargaining Committee and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

  Union Bid Form : Your application for this position will serve as your union Bid Form.

  Civil Service Classification : Non-Competitive

  REQUIREMENTS

  General Application Requirements:

  You must submit or show proof of all of the following at the time of filing your application (unless otherwise indicated below) or your application will be disqualified. Disqualifications based on any of these General Application Requirements are not subject to a Civil Service appeal.

  Applicants must submit a complete application including education, work experience, a resume, and completed supplemental questions.

  Applicants must become residents of the City of Pittsburgh prior to employment and remain a resident throughout employment.

  A current, valid Class C Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Operator's License OR out of state equivalent MUST be presented at the time of filing application, which must be maintained throughout employment.

  Please attach a clear picture/copy of your license to your application or it will be disqualified.

  A current, valid Class C PA Motor Vehicle Operator's License is required prior to appointment if you posses an out of state equivalent.

  You are required to obtain a Commercial Class A or B Motor Vehicle Operator's License with the "L" airbrake restriction lifted from the license within one (1) year from the date of hire.

  NOTE: Applicants must provide their own set of tools. Please click HERE to view the tools needed at the time of hire. All employees hired as a titled Heavy Equipment Repair Specialist will receive an annual tool allowance of $700 towards the purchase of all specified tools by June 1 of each year. This is subject to change based on the collective bargaining agreement.

  NOTE: The City of Pittsburgh, as a matter of policy, conducts pre-employment and promotional background investigations on all candidates being considered for positions. The background investigation includes but is not limited to criminal background, driver's license and City of Pittsburgh real estate tax payments. Candidates may be disqualified from consideration from employment based on the results of their background investigation (as it relates to the job for which the applicant is being considered).

  Qualifying Requirements:

  Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position. You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status.

  WORK EXPERIENCE : The application must clearly show two ( 2 ) years of full-time experience in heavy equipment mechanics. Applicants must list all equipment repaired in the last two ( 2 ) years. (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)

  EDUCATION/TRAINING : The application must clearly show a high school diploma or GED Equivalency.

  EQUIVALENCY : Education or training may be substituted on a year for year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position (based on the sum of work experience listed above) . The Total Qualifying Requirement is two ( 2 ) years. (See NOTE under the General Application Requirements Section above regarding the verification of education/training.)

  CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS

  If you meet the qualifying requirements listed above, you will be sent a letter of admission (when applicable) for the following examination(s). You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position. Candidates who receive job offers must pass a medical examination (when applicable) prior to start date.

  POSITION DUTIES

  Repairs, services, and operates various types of heavy equipment (i.e., rubber and track high lifts, dozer, rubber and track pavers, rollers, graders, backhoes, sweepers, tractors, gradalls, etc.).

  Repairs and services various types of small equipment (i.e., asphalt whackers, water pumps, landscaping equipment, etc.).

  Assists in construction and maintenance of City property, providing such tasks as excavating and backfilling for water line work; road construction, road repair, plowing snow, etc. as assigned.

  Installs, repairs and services various types of winter operations equipment (ie, salt spreaders, plows, electronic spreader controls, etc.).

  Inspects all mechanical equipment and repairs and/or replaces parts as needed or required

  Ensures that appropriate safety procedures are observed in the operation of, repair of and vicinity of equipment.

  Prepares parts orders for purchase.

  Drives a City vehicle as required.

  Uses a variety of technological hardware (i.e., computers, laptops, tablets, smart phones, GPS, cameras, etc.) and/or software (i.e., email, Cartegraph, Microsoft Office, etc.) to maintain records and prepare accurate reports on work performed.

  Performs such other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.

  May work all three shifts, weekends and holidays.
