About Heavy Equipment Operator

  Come work for Eastern Iowa's premier paving contractor! We're hiring seasonal equipment operators and offering year-round benefits. In addition to running heavy construction equipment, our operators perform a wide variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor in heavy construction projects.

  Schedule

  Days and hours of work vary including overnight and weekend work based on weather, project size, and location.

  Responsibilities

  Safely operate heavy highway construction equipment with respect for individual and crew safety.

  Conduct daily pre and post trip inspection of equipment including maintenance checks.

  Communicate to foreperson and equipment manager when repairs are needed.

  Load and unload trucks, haul and hoist materials, transport rakes, lutes, shovels, and spray cans to the job site.

  Operate a variety of hand and power tools.

  Maintain a clean job site - pick up all tools and equipment each day.

  Participate in weekly toolbox safety talks and annual company safety meeting.

  Wear personal protective equipment as required.

  Other duties as assigned.

  Required Skills/Abilities

  Must have regular, dependable attendance to be physically present each day.

  Able to safely operate heavy construction equipment.

  Must be able to listen to, understand, and follow instructions in English.

  Able to pass pre-employment drug screen.

  Education and Experience

  Valid driver's license with insurable driving record. CDL preferred but not required.

  Be 18 years of age or older.

  Must have at least 6 months experience operating heavy equipment.

  Physical Requirements

  Able to work in all weather conditions.

  Able to frequently climb in and out of equipment using three points of contact.

  Must be able to safely work alongside moving construction equipment, pedestrians, and open lanes of traffic in both day and night conditions.

  Must have sufficient vision including depth perception and peripheral vision which permits the safe operation of heavy equipment.

  Able to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time (10+ hours)

  Must have sufficient manual dexterity to operate heavy construction equipment, finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms, and to operate hand and power tools.

  Lift, push, pull, and/or carry 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occassionally.

  Must be able to stand, sit, squat, kneel, bend, crouch, twist, reach, and climb.

  Work Environment

  Job hazards include exposure to dust, noise, fumes, and all types of weather conditions. The noise level is usually loud. Operators are regularly exposed to, and work alongside, moving heavy construction equipment, pedestrians, and open lanes of traffice in both day and night conditions. Vehicles may travel at speeds in excess of 70 mph.
