Purpose of the role
The Head of Journals Policy sets the strategy, manages the work of cross-functional teams, and delivers the activities necessary for the success of Springer Nature's Journals Policy Programme. The ultimate goals are to ensure journal editorial and publishing policies are strategically-aligned, coordinated, and well-implemented. The Journals Policy Programme will aim to delight authors and enhance trust among researchers in our processes, products, and content. It will aim to make publishing operations easier, and drive indexing success.
Role responsibilities
Strategy
Create and lead strategies, in close collaboration with the Research Integrity Director, plan and implement activities for successful Journals Policy Management across editorial and publishing policy.
Set and achieve targets for policy and related activities in collaboration with colleagues. Successful Journals Policy Management delights authors, enhances trust among researchers in our processes, products, and content, makes publishing operations easier, and drives indexing success.
Negotiate, persuade, influence and gain support for plans and activities across teams and including senior-level stakeholders.
Stakeholder management
Effectively coordinate the cross-functional team of colleagues assigned to lead and be accountable for Journals policy, its governance and management.
Effectively coordinate the cross functional teams responsible for delivering new policy projects.
Work collaboratively with colleagues and foster a culture of diversity and teamwork, including with colleagues who should be consulted and informed about its strategies, plans and activities.
Engage successfully with cross-functional team members, including colleagues who are senior managers through to colleagues who are early career professionals.
Set KPIs, track and report on progress, use data to inform and drive success, adjust activities to accommodate change, and manage risk. Celebrate successes.
Plan and submit budget requirements when indicated.
Operations
Lead cross-functional projects and project teams to solve complex Journals policy problems, using sophisticated thought and judgement from across contributors to identify innovative solutions.
Drive the achievement of Journals policy objectives, aligned to overall SN strategy, by engaging and inspiring colleagues to undertake and complete planned activities.
Manage meetings, documentation, and communications to ensure the Journals policy programme is sufficiently well-organised, transparent and open. Use data and insights to inform and determine changes and continuous improvement.
Develop, maintain and share knowledge about policies. Develop resources for colleagues, and communicate about those resources effectively. Equip internal stakeholders to answer policy questions themselves. Provide consultancy where needed.
Manage and cultivate relationships and information-sharing with external stakeholders, directly or through members of the cross-functional teams. Ensure Springer Nature is represented on committees and working groups that are important for policy success, either by representing Springer Nature yourself or by securing positions on those groups for members of the cross-functional teams.
Set requirements for and oversee development, maintenance, and use of knowledge management systems for Journals policy. Specify requirements for software and other support for the policy programme team, and to deliver policy success broadly at Springer Nature.
Experience, Skills and Qualifications
Significant experience working in a senior role related to quality and policy in journals publishing
Lean Methodology certification would be beneficial
Bachelor's Degree (or higher) or equivalent experience
In-depth experience of editorial and publishing policy in research and scholarly journals.
Broad knowledge of related functions and disciplines within research publishing.
Demonstrated success coordinating, influencing and project managing cross-functional teams, in a matrix organisation.
Significant experience working in a multicultural global environment, collaborating with diverse teams, and establishing connections with stakeholders from different backgrounds and regions.
Experience identifying and solving complex technical, operational and organizational problems, and using knowledge to make informed decisions.
Creates and communicates clear strategy, delivers action plans, reports on progress and results.
Leads high-performing project teams to solve complex problems, using sophisticated analytical thought to create innovative solutions.
Builds buy-in internally and externally, from team members, colleagues, stakeholders and partners. Communicates difficult concepts and negotiates with others to arrive at a shared point of view.
Interprets business challenges and recommends best practices to make improvements. Manages and improves projects and processes so they are effective, efficient and simple.
Applies expertise to contribute to wider publishing goals and customer success.
Collaborates effectively. Comfortable with hybrid and asynchronous working.
Has excellent communication and presentation skills.
Has a high level of digital literacy.

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $115,000 - $130,000.
