Program Location: Raleigh, NC or Charlotte, NC
A GIS Intern will spend time between a GIS Technologist and GIS Analyst role. A GIS Technologist supports the operation and maintenance of the company’s GIS application by maintaining, reporting, and posting work or by gathering data to be input by others. The GIS Technologist may support Distribution or Transmission functions. A GIS Analyst provides technical expertise to solve more complex problems. Examples include completing special data and map requests, data collection, development of standard procedures and documents, and manipulation of metadata. Interns are expected to work independently, or as part of a team, under close-to-moderate supervision, and to develop to advance their skills.
Responsibilities
With some supervision and increased latitude for unreviewed work, duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities.
Willingness to make sufficient choices and decisions, with some guidance or direction from a mentor or supervisor.
Openly receives coaching and mentoring from other GIS Analysts and GIS Technologists
Strives to continually improve job-related, technical, and professional knowledge as well as skills and performance.
Conducts GIS and related studies.
Independently prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and maps to be checked by mentor or supervisor.
Develops, supports, troubleshoots, and makes recommendations to custom GIS applications, scripts, tools, and web services.
Understands, and interprets complex design drawings, property plats, maps, and other related information as necessary to post data in the Company GIS system.
Translate project requirements into real-world GIS solutions that fit in with current programs, projects and initiatives.
Assists with developing GIS desktop and web-based applications using ESRI products while integrating various other programming technologies.
Reviews mapping data for quality and accuracy.
Manipulates, analyzes, and extracts geographic data from a complex array of datasets.
Prepares documentation of programs and procedures.
Supports Customer Delivery during storm events.
Required Qualifications
Enrolled in an accredited college or university pursing an associate degree or higher degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, GIS, Geography, Geology or a closely related technical discipline.
Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
Must not graduate prior to August 2024
Must be able to operate a computer, keyboard, mouse, printer, and associated equipment
Desired Qualifications
Good written and oral communication skills.
Ability to integrate with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Experience with ESRI ArcGIS software; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Familiarity with querying and reporting information from databases using Python, SQL, Microsoft Report Builder (MRB), and/or Microsoft Power Business Intelligence (Power BI)
Ability to gain basic knowledge and experience in Electric Transmission and Distribution mapping, connectivity, and editing.
Willingness to learn new software tools that support Electric Transmission and Distribution connectivity models.
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills with the ability and willingness to share information and transfer knowledge to others.
Demonstrated leadership skills.
Demonstrated strong customer-service attitude.
Understanding of basic principles of project management.
Experience with troubleshooting technical and process-based issues.
Working Conditions
Must be able to work full-time (40 hours/week) throughout the duration of the summer.
Occasional travel to other work locations as needed
Hybrid mobility classification - work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations.
Candidates who are hired for a hybrid role and reside outside of 50 miles from their assigned work location may be eligible for a housing stipend. This is a one-time payment to help offset housing & relocation expenses and will be determined at time of offer.
