To quote a popular saying at TNC, "you'll join for the mission, and you'll stay for the people."WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHERThe Fire and Stewardship Crew Member (FSCM) will work in a team setting within a three-person crew and a Fire and Stewardship Coordinator leading them. This team will engage in prescribed fire operations such as ignition, suppression, mop-up, fuels monitoring, and other RX fire tasks as assigned. The FSCM will use and maintain equipment to prepare fire lines via chainsaws, leaf blowers, and other machinery. When not engaged in RX Fire the FSCM will partake in timber stand improvement projects, understory thinning, and other preserve maintenance tasks as needed. As part of the FSCM's ongoing professional development, they will be expected to keep informed of new techniques and enhance their skills to grow professionally and within fire certification credentials. In addition, they shall work to maintain positive relationships in the professional and local communities they work in. This position will include participation in prescribed fire operations with other partnering non-profits, local Prescribe Burn Associations, state, or federal agencies such as the Missouri Conservation Department, U.S. Forest Service, U.S Park Service, and the Missouri DNR. The FSCMs may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOUFSCMs should have some experience or capability to learn proper use and basic maintenance of hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and trailers. They will perform preserve management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire, so being prepared for a flexible work schedule is necessary. Members will be expected to perform heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. Field stewardship can be dangerous and stressful but, safety and our crew's wellbeing is our number one priority. FSCMs should have conflict resolution and problem-solving skills. FSCMs should be prepared for crew housing, where crew members will live in close proximity to one another both during and after work hours. Housing will be provided but, there may be an occasional need to camp for short durations. Anticipated start date for FSCMs will be February 2nd, 2024, ending May 30th, 2024. The FSCM will be part of one of two crews located in either Van Buren or Lebanon Missouri. During the fire season the FSCM will be expected to work irregular hours outdoors (weather dependent) in a strenuous setting with possibilities for travel an weekend availabilities. The FSCM will be compensated at 16.00/hr.WHAT YOU'LL BRING* High school diploma and 6 months of related experience. * Must have or be willing to obtain the following certifications prior to start date: Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire line (L-180), Introduction to Wild Land Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130). See http://www.tncfiremanual.org/firefighter.htm * Will be expected to achieve physical fitness standard of carrying a 45-pound pack over 3 miles of level terrain in 45 minutes or less (Arduous Level Pack Test) and maintain such fitness.* Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, and driver's license).* Must have valid driver's license and good driving record. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS* Open minded and willingness to partake in a learning environment.* 6 months -1 year of related experience.* Experience operating various types of equipment such as UTV, ATV, Truck and Trailer, Chainsaws, and water pumps.* Multi-lingual skills and multicultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.WHAT WE BRINGSince 1951, TNC has been doing work you can believe in.
