JOB SUMMARY
The Chief Nursing Officer is responsible for overseeing, planning, and directing the nursing practice and clinical services for Baylor Scott and White Health (BSWH). Provides clinical leadership across all patient care settings, both inpatient and outpatient, within assigned area of responsibility. Oversee the operations of patient care service areas including ambulatory care, cardiology, respiratory, rehabilitation, , emergency medicine, and other nursing or clinical support functions. Establishes and communicates the clinical strategic goals and objectives for assigned nursing units or clinical areas in accordance with the BSWH overall patient care goals and objectives. Develops and implements clinical protocols, nursing policies and procedures, new patient care models, and nursing quality improvement initiatives. Maintains and monitors clinical operational efficiency, standards of care, and patient service delivery levels. Ensures high quality patient care delivery in a cost-effective manner. Negotiates interdepartmental resources and communicates with other BSWH departments to ensure effective and efficient delivery of patient care. Collaborates with operations leadership (President, Chief Delivery System Ops Officer, and Chief Clinical Ops Officer), physician leadership (CMO), and other senior leadership for assigned area of responsibility to deliver patient care with a focus on ensuring high quality patient outcomes, improving patient experience, and achieving service excellence in healthcare.
A system Executive Vice President (EVP) defines vision and strategy in complex and diversified leadership roles with accountability for broad business results. Defines strategy and direction for major and multiple business operations and staff areas. Makes significant and obvious impact to BSWH through financial "P&L" accountability, risk management, and cost management. Decisions involve distant time horizons and highly complex internal and external factors. Typically interacts with system "Chief" level. Oversees multiple levels of subordinate executives in major functional areas with significant headcount. Has full and direct authority for capital and operational budgets, staffing, and talent management. Accountable for establishing and cascading corporate strategies and objectives to subordinate positions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Serves as Chief Nursing Officer and top nursing leader for BSWH and its affiliates.
Sets the system-wide strategic plan and priorities for nursing leadership to ensure efficient and effective clinical operations that provide high quality, safe, and affordable patient care at BSWH.
Oversees and leads the development and implementation of strategic plans, clinical objectives, policies, standards, procedures, and best practices that ensure excellence in nursing and support the advancement of the nursing practice at BSWH.
Guides and leads BSWH system-wide nursing programs and initiatives that drive continuous clinical improvement, discovery, and innovation through research, nursing standardization, evidence-based practices, and optimal patient care performance.
Leads and champions ongoing quality and patient safety programs to promote, measure, assess and monitor quality improvement activities focused on patient and clinical staff outcomes.
Oversees and directs the use of clinical nursing informatics, aligning people, processes, and technology to ensure quality in nursing care that exceeds national standards and is aligned with BSWH business objectives.
Develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with physician leadership, senior operational leadership, clinical service departments, community organizations, and other stakeholders to determine innovative ways to achieve clinical goals and objectives for BSWH.
Ensures BSWH clinical compliance with all applicable regulatory, licensing, and accrediting agencies.
Represents BSWH to external entities, including constituencies, health care organizations, professional associations, purchaser of health care services, and regulatory and governmental agencies.
Sponsors and champions key clinical initiatives, programs, and task forces to improve patient care across BSWH.
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS
Bachelor's degree in Nursing. Master's required. Doctorate preferred.
15+ years of experience in Nursing, and experience as Chief Nursing Officer in a complex, integrated health system environment.
7+ years of leadership experience preferred.
Strong knowledge of clinical care processes across all nursing disciplines across the continuum of care.
Experience in operational enhancement, change management, and process improvement.
Strategic thinker and proficient in decision-making.
Informative and persuasive presentation skills.
