This position is responsible for structural analysis and design and drafting of Transportation products to be quoted and fabricated such as sign structures, traffic mast arm structures, bridge girder, soundwall, street lighting, etc. Included in this is the full design responsibility for processing specific ordersand major developmental projects, general design engineering support for drafting and sales, and providing guidance and training for Associate, Design, Project Engineers, and Senior Professional Engineers. In addition, the position provides technical leadership through participation in professional organizations, code committees, and technical presentations.
Essential Functions:
Staffs, develops, and oversight the engineering and drafting group supporting transportation products to best achieve goals and objectives in coordination with overall Divisional goals and objectives.
Develops and recommends manpower and budget recommendations and assures control of expenses.
Develops action plans necessary to meet the specific business sales forecast and the general Divisional goals.
Provides training, direction, and motivation for subordinates and proper recognition of performance to promote professional development and to assure that the work is performed satisfactorily. Reviews performance of subordinates and recommends appropriate action.
Maintains organization culture across the departments that aligns with Core Values
Maintains ownership of transportation drafting and design manuals and processes. Overnight on establishing and/or maintaining work procedures and guidelines to facilitate flow and accuracy of work, and prioritizes schedules when necessary to meet requirements of sales, manufacturing, and the customer.
Establishes criteria and analysis methods used in the design and drafting of structures and establishes the methods used to assure the structural capability of these products in coordination with the larger Divisional engineering group.
Responsible for the process and procedures for customer specification management. This responsibility starts at first specification and follows through all revisions by our customers. Aligning standards, parts and downstream impact on processes and planning will be in this scope.
Participates in professional societies and industry technical activities. Keeps self and others informed about competition, industry standards, new innovations, and technological advances.
Maintains good relationships with customers, agents, suppliers, and consulting engineering firms. Emphasizes responsiveness to customer needs while maintaining company goals.
Evaluates customers and their projects in terms of balancing meeting their needs and the company’s performance goals and objectives. Interprets customer specifications, recommends alternative approaches where appropriate, and negotiates their acceptance.
Evaluates field problem reports and initiates corrective action to prevent problem recurrence.
Works with manufacturing and quality assurance to establish and maintain acceptable tolerances and standards of workmanship.
Recommends the utilization or rejection of damaged or defective material.
Promotes and maintains a productive working relationship both within the engineering department and with other departments of the Company.
Participates in the Divisional Engineering efforts to standardize design and material on a Divisional basis and to maintain a common engineering technique.
Other Important Details about the Role:
The incumbent applies intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields. This person makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods, and represents the organization at conferences and industry committees. The position requires the use of advanced techniques and the modification and extension of theories, precepts, and practices of the incumbent's own field and related sciences and disciplines. The knowledge and expertise required for this level of work usually results from progressive experience, including work comparable to that of a Senior Professional Engineer.
The incumbent must possess a high level of technical competence in structural engineering; a complete understanding of the end use of the product and the nature of the design loads to which the product will be subjected; knowledge of fabrication and welding procedures, manufacturing processes used in the product, and quality assurance requirements and methods.
The incumbent must possess the management skill necessary to lead highly educated subordinates and motivate them in order to affect a high degree of productivity in a functional team environment. The activities of this position are intertwined with the functions of many different people of diverse backgrounds. The incumbent must possess good communication skills in order to:
Illustrate his ideas in layman’s terms to people from non-technical disciplines;
Define concepts in precise engineering terms to technical people.
This position encounters a wide variety of problems ranging from engineering problem solving to schedule and resource management to interpersonal relations.
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
Strong structural or civil engineering background with 8 years of experience in the design of transportation related products
Bachelor Degree in Engineering, Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with structural experience
Professional Engineering registration (qualified through examination)
Skills in managing professional people including strong leadership qualities and the ability to motivate employees towards personal and common objectives
Familiar with structural design codes such as ACI, ASCE, AASHTO, etc
Ability to manage multiple tasks within the Engineering organization and provide direction to individual engineers and drafters, Territorial and Strategic Teams, and other developmental teams
Ability to establish goals and direction for teams as well as empower and support team’s actions
A good understanding of the end use of the product, its function, and the nature of the design elements
A good understanding of the fabrication, welding procedures and processes, and quality assurance requirements used by Valmont for these products
Good communication skills in both technical and non-technical application
Fluent in English Oral and Written communication
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Emphasis or other related field of study
Structural Engineering registration (qualified through examination)
Knowledge or understanding of computer programming
Familiarity with Finite Element Analysis including FEA software such as Ansys
Passport holder and ability to obtain Visas in countries where Valmont conducts business
Computer Software Proficiency: JIRA, Windchill, Solidworks, Inventor
