The primary purpose of this position is to perform investigation, analysis, diagnosis, testing, tuning, correction, optimization, alignment, and verification/certification to ensure continuous and reliable operation of air traffic control and landing and communication systems. Responsibilities Certifies assigned systems and subsystems to ensure compliance with USAF and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) established standards and safety requirements. Determines when equipment malfunctions warrant shutdown of various systems. Provides technical guidance, training, and assistance to other technicians and conducts on-the-job (OJT) training to apprentices in all phases of work. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Electronics Technical Series 0856, Group Coverage Qualification Standard for Technical and Medical Support Positions. INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: This series covers technical positions supervising, leading, or performing work involving applying: knowledge of the techniques and theories characteristic of electronics, such as a knowledge of basic electricity and electronic theory, algebra, and elementary physics; knowledge of electronic equipment design, development, evaluation, testing, installation, and maintenance; and knowledge of the capabilities, limitations, operations, design, characteristics, and functional use of a variety of types and models of electronic equipment and systems related to, but less than, a full professional knowledge of electronic engineering. Electronics technicians may have gained experience assisting in work situations including: Maintenance, Installation, Fabrication, Testing and Evaluation/Research and Development, Sustainment, Troubleshooting. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower broadband NJ-II, equivalent to the next to lower grade GS-8 or equivalent in the Federal Service. Specialized experience must include ensuring systems are operating at peak efficiency with minimum interruptions by performing optimization, analysis, periodic testing, and corrective procedures; participating in installing, modifying, and final testing of all newly installed ATCALS and weather equipment; skilled critical thinking in identifying, analyzing, and solving complex issues, as appropriate. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of Digital Airport Surveillance Radar (DASR), Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS), Digital Bright Radar Indicator Tower Equipment (DBRITE) or equivalent replacement display system, Flight Data Input Output (FDIO), the NEXRAD weather Radar system, Instrument Landing System (ILS), VHF Omniranger/Tactical Air Navigation (VORTAC), Weather sensing and display systems, ATC Communications switch and digital recorder, ad ground to air radios. Knowledge of wide range of electronic principals and practices, operating parameters, capabilities, and limitations of electronic systems associated with air traffic control and weather radar equipment; and of systems and component design, capabilities, configurations, limitations, and functional operation; and various types of electronics logic. Knowledge of safety regulations, procedures, and practices. Skill in the interpretation of technical data such as drawings, schematics, blueprints, and specifications of complete electronic systems; in analyzing problems in integrated/interfacing systems involving numerous complex circuits; and in using complex electronic and electromechanical test and measuring equipment using integrated test functions for different purposes. Ability to modify standard procedures, adapt equipment or techniques, and make departures from previous approaches to solve technical problems or improve system performance for highly complex electronic systems; to trace electronics logic from one system to another; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships to represent the organization in a professional manner. Ability to use computer terminals to enter and extract data to maintain records and document actions. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education ARE YOU USING YOUR EDUCATION TO QUALIFY?
