The City of Palo Alto is seeking an accomplished journey-level Electrician to join our dynamic and collaborative team of highly skilled professionals in the Public Works Department.
Within the Facilities Division of the Public Works Department, electricians perform a variety of skilled and technically complex tasks in the operation and maintenance of City facilities with e ssential functions that include installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining building electrical distribution systems, lighting fixtures, lighting control systems, motors, VFDs, EV chargers, generators, and transfer switches. They shall employ their knowledge, skills, and abilities in the areas of installation, operation, adjustments, troubleshooting, and maintenance of electrical components and systems. Additionally, electricians perform other related work as required to maintain City Facilities in a safe and efficient condition.
This is a journey-level electrician position performing complex facilities maintenance duties. Employees are fully aware of operating procedures and policies and will receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise. Strong skills in organizing, prioritizing, planning, and purchasing materials and equipment for all assigned projects and work orders are a must! The incumbent will be part of a 12-person skilled Facilities team who are responsible for maintaining a very diverse group of buildings that range from fire stations, community centers, libraries, theaters, parking garages, museums and zoos, interpretive centers, swimming pool complexes, art centers, and multi-story office type buildings.

Essential Duties:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Installs panel boards, conduits, wires, transformers, circuit breakers, disconnects, outlets, relays, time clocks, and switches required in making additions, extensions, or alterations in electrical installations for power and light for City buildings and structures.
Troubleshoots and programs lighting control systems.
Conducts regular preventative maintenance inspections of city buildings and equipment to ensure proper operating conditions.
Performs emergency repairs, as necessary; uses established safety procedures in doing such work.
Responds to requests to work overtime when conditions warrant and directed by management.
Reads, interprets and works from engineered drawings, schematics, writing diagrams, sketches, O & M manuals, and verbal instructions to accomplish required work.
Operates and maintains hand tools, power tools, and equipment for a variety of trades.
Handles complaints and answers questions from city departments and the public, as necessary.

Sufficient education, training, and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities, which would typically be acquired through:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and c ompletion of an accredited electrician apprentice program, or, Associate of Science degree in electronics or equivalent experience.
Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
May be required to work on standby and/or overtime in emergencies.
Desired Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited electrical apprenticeship program that includes theory and on-the-job work (preferred).
Four years of journey-level experience working as an electrician in installing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing building electrical systems and equipment in a commercial, industrial, or large facility environment.
Trained in the use of arc flash protective safety equipment.
