Reporting to the Senior Director, CBC News Operations, this role will support and oversee the local leaders who manage day-to-day operations across the organization and help drive our ongoing digital transformation as part of the CBC News Operations senior leadership team. Further, the incumbent will be responsible to make certain that our standardized workflow and technology choices are suited to the needs of teams across the country. The Director of Local Operations will also be expected to represent CBC News when collaborating with leaders throughout the broader CBC/Radio-Canada organization to clearly convey the needs and interests of the News division in strategic decision-making that pertains to technology, infrastructure and workflow.

The Director of Local Operations will also work closely with editorial leadership across CBC News to maintain alignment between editorial strategy and operations. Further, this role will be accountable to the Senior Managing Directors who oversee local news stations by keeping them informed of strategic and critical operational matters and collaborating on undertakings and initiatives that could impact their areas of responsibility.

Main responsibilities and impact:

Oversee and support local operations managers in the management of day-to-day operations across local production centres. Promote collaboration between teams to ensure consistency and cohesiveness in operational standards and practices across CBC News.

Oversee day-to-day technology and user support for locations managed by English Services to ensure consistency and cohesiveness in operational standards and practices across CBC News and, in collaboration with French Services and Technology Infrastructure, promote the same level of consistency and cohesiveness across the entire organization.

Maintain consistent alignment with Sr. Managing Directors within the CBC News Senior Leadership team, providing them timely updates on operational matters of strategic and critical importance, and obtaining their support and buy-in for any measures of material impact.

As a member of the CBC News Operations senior leadership team, collaborate with team members to define strategic priorities for CBC News Operations and shape work plans to deliver on strategic goals that are in alignment with goals and objectives determined by Editorial leadership.

Represent the interests and priorities of local production centres within the CBC News Operations Senior Leadership team, ensuring that the division-wide decisions pertaining to standards, practices, workflows and technology choices are suited to local needs.

Represent CBC News and advocate for its interests and requirements in enterprise-wide strategic planning that relate to technology, infrastructure and workflow. Demonstrate that the News Division speaks with one voice on these matters when collaborating with stakeholders across the organization.

Interact with peers, other colleagues, and senior management and occasionally Executives and external contacts across CBC/Radio-Canada and positively influence editorial and operations teams, senior leaders, and on occasion, executives, to achieve results.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree or college diploma in media production, journalism or related field, or equivalent professional experience.

Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.

Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a data-driven approach to decision-making and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

Knowledge of media production tools, technology, and infrastructure required for live and on-demand news, for distribution on terrestrial, streaming, and mobile platforms

Strong understanding of audience consumption behaviour, audience needs, and our News Strategy

Reliable, collaborative, highly organized manager with proven ability to empower teams and implement clear workflows and processes

Long-term planning skills, ability to identify production requirements for future state

Negotiation skills (internal and external) - a strong asset

Functional bilingualism (English/French) - a strong asset

5 years experience as a manager in media production, with a proven track record of reliability, data-driven planning, and the ability to build collaborative relationships and bring teams together
