　　General Summary: A Diagnostic Medical Sonographer utilizes imaging equipment and soundwaves to form ultrasounds of numerous parts of the body. The incumbent will create and record ultrasound images which are interpreted by a physician. They must use considerable judgement and have a broad knowledge base in acoustical wave behavior, instrument variables and a complete understanding of human anatomy; exercise professional judgement in performance of services and maintains strict medical ethics, applies appropriate patient care, and recognizes patient conditions essential for successful completion of the procedure.

　　Essential Functions:

　　Ensures quality examinations through knowledge of ultrasound equipment and accessories utilized in performing ultrasound of abdomen, pelvis, related structures, vascular areas, echocardiography, superficial structures, vascular structures, heart, and greater vessels.Select appropriate instrumentation for each type of exam and select appropriate instrumentation changes necessary to adjust to patient variables.Maintain order and cleanliness of equipment and ultrasound exam area.Recognize and report any changes in the performance of ultrasound or other equipment used to perform an ultrasound exam.Identify safety protocol guidelines and adhere to safety hazards.Recognize patient conditions and respond accordingly.Recognize when equipment quality assurance tests indicate that the physician and other hospital personnel should be notified.Follow scan protocols that are essential to each physician who interprets ultrasound exams.Complies, records, and maintain files according to procedure as required for accurate and up-to-date departmental records and / or reports.Assures quality examinations for all patient's ultrasounds.Good listening skills and ability to communicate effectively both verbally and non-verbally.Participates in cost containment activities that include reviewing schedule of procedures to determine specifications for supplies and equipment, charges that are assigned appropriately for exams performed, uses work time productively.
