  POSITION PURPOSE

  This position in the Department of Economics will oversee communication strategies and tactics in support of strategic initiatives and fundraising goals, keeping target audiences informed of departmental programs, accomplishments, and perspective. As well, the position will help advance the department’s brand, and raise awareness of the work being done in both academia and research.

  The Development Services Officer will interface with executive leadership, as well as faculty and staff within the department. Typical responsibilities include content development for internal and external communication channels, media relations, public relations, social media management, fundraising communications, blogging, newsletter development, photo management and event content planning and support.

  Other requirements include excellent verbal and written communication skills, including interviewing, writing, editing and proof-reading capabilities; experience in digital storytelling and content marketing; strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail; publication and photography management; and the ability to keep on schedule within a specific timeline with milestones and deliverables.

  This position requires a self-starter and critical thinker who is able to take on and prioritize projects and tasks, as well as work independently and as part of a team while adhering to tight deadlines. Importantly, the position must be able to interface and network professionally and confidently with faculty, staff, alumni and members of the public when representing the Department of Economics.

  DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Communications and content development – 40%

  Develop talking points for internal/external audiences when needed.

  Contribute to writing and/or editing communications for the Chair and other key leadership as needed.

  Interpret complex economics related information and develop content using a storytelling approach for relevant communications to be disseminated to a lay audience.

  Curate and manage the department’s quarterly electronic newsletter.

  Write, edit, or produce content creation for external-facing communications, including feature stories, news stories, ghost writing editorials or news articles to appear in community or professional publications.

  Produce integrated campaigns with a variety of project types, including written, web-based/digital, social media, video, photo slideshows, etc.

  Project-manage production of marketing collateral, such as fact sheets, postcards, signage or event materials.

  Manage the department’s social media presence. Properties include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.

  Maintain the department’s website, supporting all programs and users in content management.Marketing and Communications Support – 5%

  Contribute to marketing and communications strategy development and implementation. Write and edit content and/or advise on content creation, including stories, reports, and select executive-level correspondence.

  Track and report the results of marketing and communications efforts to demonstrate impact.Networking, Collaboration and Relationship Building – 5%

  Foster professional relationships and participate in work groups or meetings on campus for marcom/development professionals relevant to this work.

  Stay current on advancement, marketing, and strategic communications methods by analyzing peer organizations’ outreach practices.Advancement and Donor Relations – 40%

  Act as the point of contact for public media relations, alumni, and friends of the department.

  Coordinate all fundraising and stewardship efforts with Advancement staff, including thank you letters to donors and scholarship/fellowship recipients, professorship research updates, and tracking of gifts.

  Develop and maintain an annual Advancement strategy with Advancement officer, Department Chair, and Outreach Director.

  Process and maintain monthly gift records.Other Duties – 10%

  Plan, oversee and support department events, to include seminars, graduation, lectures, and occasional receptions.

  Manage department’s Mentor Program.

  To be assigned by the Outreach Director, Department Chair or Administrator as needed. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  A bachelor's degree in Economics or related field.

  At least two years of experience in fundraising, alumni relations, communications, or related activity.

  Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive information.

  Demonstrated ability to (1) develop and implement a plan to achieve organization goals, (2) build positive relationships, (3) interact successfully with diverse populations, and (4) work independently and as a member of a team.

  Must be interested in and become well informed on economic issues and be able to communicate them to a broad audience.

  Must demonstrate excellent writing skills and be able to tell a compelling story.

  Must have strong interpersonal, customer service and verbal communication skills.

  Strong computer skills, including an excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Teams, and Outlook.

  Willingness and ability to learn and use UW Advancement's gift database systems, event and e-marketing software, and other proprietary computer applications.

  Will need to occasionally attend evening and/or weekend events. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  Knowledge of UW Advancement policies and procedures, including use of the database software.

  Fundraising or alumni relations experience in a higher education setting.

  Event planning experience.
