  Job Description

  The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Department of Human Services (DHS) merged on July 1, 2022 to form one agency, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). We are seeking a Deputy Medical Director and State Epidemiologist (Physician).

  This positions serves as the Deputy State Medical Director and State Public Health Epidemiologist for the Iowa Health and Human Services Agency. In coordination with, and with direction from, the State Medical Director, provides 24/7 medical expertise on both infectious and non-infectious health issues. Consults with state and local public health personnel and medical professionals on medical issues. Assists with the coordination of state health programs and provides regular support to key clinical staff throughout the agency. Acts as the State’s liaison to federal response efforts when the Medical Director is not available, ensuring close coordination with other state agencies and regional partners to improve the health of Iowans.

  Direct and participate in educational efforts concerning health risks, acute diseases and disease prevention. This includes responding to media contacts, consultations to healthcare providers, involvement in formal educational efforts for public health and medical professionals.

  Provide oversight and management of all public health epidemiology needs for the agency by providing regular updates on the trends and key epidemiological issues facing public health for the state of Iowa. Direct disease investigation and surveillance activities performed by the Public Health Division.

  Direct state-wide disease surveillance, investigation, and follow-up. Assess trends of diseases, risk factors for health events, effectiveness of prevention and control efforts, and implement appropriate modifications to improve the health of Iowans. Consult with the public, local public health officials, and medical professionals on medical and epidemiological issues. Coordinates state health programs, and coordinates public health efforts across state lines and with federal agencies to identify and reduce the impacts of morbidity and mortality on Iowans. React to health events to assure appropriate public health response, and coordinate with other state agencies during emergencies to assist in public health preparedness and response.

  Provide 24/7 epidemiological expertise on both infectious and non-infectious health issues and advise state leadership during emergencies to assist in public health preparedness and response and serve as a lead point of contact when executing a state emergency response.

  Only applicants who meet the Minimum Qualification Requirements and meet all selective requirements will be placed on the eligible list.

  Selectives

  535 Public Health:

  6 months experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both related to improving, maintaining, and protecting the general condition of health within society, either on a personal, institutional, organizational, or community basis. Experience may be gained from direct provision of health care or from other ancillary programs and support mechanisms such as government public health departments.

  AND

  185 Epidemiology

  6 months experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both in epidemiology, which involves:

  The surveillance for respiratory diseases, vector-born diseases, enteric diseases, antimicrobial-resistant agents, or other infectious or non-infectious diseases

  The development of protocols and procedures for data collection and analysis, ongoing analysis of data using a variety of databases and statistical analysis programs

  The development and dissemination of written reports, graphs, tables, etc

  Minimum Qualification Requirements

  Graduation from an accredited school of medicine, completion of an internship program and licensure as a physician by the State of Iowa.
