  Job Description Summary

  The Computational Social Science Lab is an organization for the research initiatives of Duncan Watts, a PIK Professor affiliated with Wharton, SEAS, and Annenberg, which seeks novel, replicable insights into societally relevant problems by applying computational methods to largescale data. Through an intensive research infrastructure, industry partnerships, and network of collaborators, the Lab aims to facilitate progress in computational social science and to establish Penn as a global leader and standard-setter in CSS.

  The Lab has been building an innovative data infrastructure with high-quality data surrounding phenomena of social importance from multiple providers. This infrastructure creates a complex data collection system as well as a validation component. The Lab needs to ensure secure but flexible access to the data in order to promote mass collaboration in an open-science format among research teams from academy and industry.

  Reporting to the Lab’s Managing Director, the Data Scientist will manage the ingestion and processing of data from external providers, implement data quality assurance procedures, manage relationships with Amazon’s AWS and other external computing clusters, and supervise third party developers.

  Job Responsibilities

  Manage the lab’s data infrastructure and ingestion of data from external providers; develop and implement rigorous data validation procedures within and across datasets from multiple providers

  Design and implement cost-effective procedures for organizing, documenting, cleaning, and storing datasets and documenting datasets and code

  Administer Watts-Lab AWS and similar external computing cluster platforms In coordination with research project managers, maintain data processing pipelines and ensure the delivery of clean and validated data within timelines

  Supervise third party developers of the Center’s data infrastructure and the lab’s AWS mTurk schedule and cost dashboard

  Consult and collaborate with the research staff and external partnership developers to ensure data storage, security, and formatting needs are in place

  Qualifications

  Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Statistics, Data Science, or a related field and five years of related experience or equivalent. Master's degree preferred.

  Proven experience in managing and architecting large-scale data infrastructures. Experience in administering cloud computing platforms and external computing clusters.

  Ability to maintain data processing pipelines, ensuring the delivery of clean and validated data. Competency in scripting and programming languages commonly used in data science, such as Python, R, SQL, and possibly others like Java or Scala.

  Advanced knowledge of data organization, documentation, cleaning, and storage procedures. Strong command of AWS services, particularly those related to data management (e.g., S3, EC2, RDS, Glue) and an understanding of AWS pricing and service optimization.
