  Job Description and Duties

  Under the direction of the Information Technology Manager I in the Data Engineering Unit (DEU), the Information Technology Specialist I (ITSI) provides guidance and technical expertise in performing a wide variety of tasks requiring innovative problem-solving where guidance is not readily available. Assist with the implementation of effective solutions to complex business problems or technical challenges by analyzing existing systems and infrastructure to identify gaps and seek innovative solutions; maintain awareness of the technology and assist in the performance of research to advise DEU Manager on designs and best practices; possess a customer-centric mindset to effectively engage with stakeholders; articulate complex concepts for achieving business goals, identify opportunities for improvement, and solution design that drives business value.

  The ITS I will perform duties in the Business Technology Management, Client Services, and Information Technology Project Management domains.

  Other duties:

  Develop and maintain data pipelines using data integration tools and custom code. Optimize pipeline performance for use with Terabyte-scale data.

  Develop custom data views and reports for the data warehouse. Respond to ad-hoc requests for data quereies and reports.

  Work with end-users and other DEU staff to develop relational data models for data stored in the data warehouse.

  Working Conditions

  The California Energy Commission offers a hybrid workplace model that is designed to support a distributed workforce of both office-based and remote-centric workers that relies on a high level of telework. Limited-in person attendance and occasional travel may be required based on the needs of the division. Regular and consistent attendance - whether office-based or remote-centric is essential to the successful performance in this position. This position is remote-centered which means the incumbent works 50 percent or more of their time monthly from an alternate work location (i.e., teleworking).

  The CEC was established by the Legislature in 1974 to address energy challenges facing the state. Summarize your experience with data engineering and the development and maintenance of data pipelines. 2. Describe your experience with the following tools and concepts specifically and with related tools and concepts if relevant: Amazon S3, Snowflake data warehousing and Snowpipe, Data Vault 2.0 relational modeling, FiveTran, and dbt Labs’ database transformation tool (dbt). 3. Describe your experience working with Terabyte-scale data. Please provide an example of a big data challenge you worked on and how you resolved it.

  Desirable Qualifications

  In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in the field of data engineering.

  Experience with Structured Query Language, Python, principles of data warehousing and relational data models, cloud-based architecture, and data integration tools.

  Experience with some or all of the related technology, including: Amazon S3, Snowflake data warehousing and Snowpipe, Data Vault 2.0 relational modeling, FiveTran, and dbt Labs’ database transformation tool (dbt).

  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
