Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live in Michigan
Purpose: The mission of the Bureau of Infectious Disease Prevention at MDHHS is to promote and protect the health, wellness, and safety of all Michigan residents. Support is needed to assist local and state public health investigators in the response to infectious disease outbreaks and case investigations. This position will work alongside central MDHHS subject matter experts, existing local health department staff, regional epidemiologists, and emergency preparedness staff to coordinate travelers' health-related activities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Epidemiology:Monitor travelers' health information flow and surveillance systems for trends in disease activity.Perform analyses on travelers' health data from the Michigan Disease Surveillance System (MDSS) and CDC DGMQ.Perform data cleaning activities within statewide reportable disease and travelers' health information systems.Support infectious disease bi-directional communication with the CDC and other states for travelers' health related data, including electronic reporting.Conduct data analyses for routine reports and other data requests.Liaise with other federal, state, and local partners on travelers' health activities.Participate in state-level preparedness and emergency response activities to respond to any public health emergency.Support activities and projects within the Surveillance and Infectious Disease Epidemiology Section and Communicable Disease Division.Report/update on a regular basis to supervisor.Maintain a positive, credible, professional relationship with all parties relevant to projects, and always represent the best interest of MPHI and MDHHS.Other duties related to this project or CD epidemiology as assigned by the supervisor.
CommunicationsPrepare travelers' health data analyses and summaries as requested and for variety of audiences from subject matter experts to laypersons.Provide travelers' health analyses updates for national and statewide teleconference calls, meetings, and conferences.
Qualifications / Requirements:
Education: A bachelor's degree in Science, Public Health and/or Statistics (minimum). Preferred candidate will possess a master's degree with a major in epidemiology or in public health with a minimum of 12 combined graduate level term hours or 8 semester hours in epidemiology and biostatistics.
Experience: Minimum of one year working in public health or infectious disease.
Important Skills and Characteristics:Knowledge of infectious disease epidemiology.Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (such as Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and is familiar with email/internet browser software.Knowledge and experience with statistical analysis software (such as SAS or R).Works well in team situations, is self-motivated, meets deadlines, and handles multiple tasks with minimal supervision.Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and be able to present scientific and technical information to audiences.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:Standard office and/or telework environment. Must have reliable home internet connection.A valid vehicle operator's license to attend off-site meetings, conferences, and trainings.
