  THE POSITION

  Part-time/On-call – no guarantee of hours

  Douglas County Sheriff's Office

  To provide security duties of a uniformed officer in the Justice Hall court rooms.

  Essential functions:

  Maintain order, discipline and security of the courts while they are in session assuring the safety and security of the courts and its participants.

  Assure secure work areas for support staff; conduct inspections of court facilities; operate metal detector, telephone, vehicle and handcuffs.

  Answer questions and interpret policy and procedures for judges, law enforcement officials, attorneys, and the public.

  Requires regular and consistent availability.

  POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  Certified or previously certified City, County, or State Police law enforcement officers only. Retired officers preferred.In addition, applications will be evaluated on the following:

  Reasonable knowledgeof the court system and familiarity with both walk-through and hand-held metal detectors. Skill inlistening techniques and principles. Requires skill with a semi-automatic pistol. Ability toqualify with a semi-automatic pistol semi-annually; ability to communicate effectively both in written and oral forms; relate to and deal with aggressive or emotionally disturbed individuals; work independently; manage time efficiently; remain calm and use good judgment during confrontational or high pressure situations; make decisions independently in accordance with established policies and procedures and use initiative and judgment in completing tasks and responsibilities; utilize problem identification and resolution techniques; establish and maintain records, reports and statistical data; courteously meet and deal effectively with other employees, law enforcement officials, court personnel, attorneys, public agencies and the public.

  SCREENING & EVALUATION

  Work is performed in a crowded/confined court environment which requires bending, color identification, climbing stairs, gripping hands & fingers, hearing alarms and voice conversation, occasionally lifting/carrying up to 14 pounds, reaching, sitting, standing, standing long periods and walking.

  PHYSICAL EXAMINATION: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment chemical detection screen. To determine if physically qualified to perform the essential functions, employment offer is conditioned upon satisfactory results of a post-offer audiological exam; conducted at county expense.

  Part-time employees budgeted less than .50, and temporary employees, shall be front loaded up to a maximum of 40 hours of annual sick leave, that may be used for qualifying reasons as set forth in Oregon's Sick Leave Law as amended from time to time. Front loaded sick leave may be pro-rated in the manner described in this rule (see table listed in rule (http://www.co.douglas.or.us/hr/personnel_rules/rules/rule_09.asp#9.3) ). Sick leave hours do not accrue or carry forward from one year to the next. For the purpose of this provision of the sick leave rule, a "year" is the Fiscal Year from July 1 to June 30. Once the Fiscal Year has started, newly hired part-time/on-call/temporary employees shall not be eligible to use sick leave until their 91st day of employment, unless otherwise required by law.
