About College Intern – Design Engineering – Mechanical/Electrical

  Some of what you'll be doing:

  There are two (2) positions available for this opportunity, one summer internship, and one full-year internship. This role will support the Port of Seattle’s Engineering Design Services Department, focusing on mechanical/electrical infrastructure and/or engineering. Interns will work closely with assigned mentors in a team environment on both office and field engineering work.

  Some of what you’ll be doing as a Mechanical/Electrical Intern:

  This role will support the Port of Seattle Engineering Design Services Department on design and facilities projects. Interns will work with Mechanical/Electrical Engineers and CAD Technicians on assignments in the office and in the field. Interns will have the opportunity to work with cross functional groups such as Civil, and Structural Engineers, and Architects, Project Management, Maintenance, and Construction.

  Assisting mechanical engineers in project-related analysis and design efforts including, but not limited to: mechanical HVAC and process equipment selection and specification; layout of mechanical process piping, valves, supports, and equipment design drawings; calculations for sizing mechanical equipment and process piping; assisting electrical engineers in project related analysis and design efforts including equipment power and communication infrastructure and systems modeling.

  Assisting electrical engineers in project-related analysis and design efforts including, but not limited to: power and communication infrastructure, calculations, specification editing, and system modeling.

  Collecting observations and assess condition of Port mechanical/electrical infrastructure.

  Other responsibilities may include: product research, quantity take-offs, construction administration, and AutoCAD work.

  Who you are:

  A student  – You must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate engineering degree or certificate program, or a recent graduate (< 1 year ago) of a program such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical/electrical engineering technology, or related field.

  *Experienced * – You have knowledge of Microsoft Office products, with a strong emphasis in Excel and Word. Knowledge of AutoCAD is preferred but proficiency is not required. 

  *A Communicator * – You possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and you have experience in working with diverse populations. 

  Organized and proactive  – You have strong organizational skills, and you can balance and prioritize multiple, simultaneous projects.

  What else you need to know:

  Work Schedule – The summer internship work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role. This is a full-time summer internship position with the ability to extend to part-time hours during the school year.

  Work Environment – This role will primarily be conducted in an office environment. Interns may make regular site visits to maritime, aviation, commercial, and industrial sites. Some sites may only be accessed by boat or other specialized means. Field work may be performed in all types of weather.

  Limited Duration – This is a limited duration position and is expected to last no longer than one year.

  Safety Requirements – You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.

  Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington State within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
