This work unit exists to provide central accounting functions to the University as well as record receivable transactions, bill, collect, monitor activity, report results, reconcile records and research and resolve billing problems for the vast majority of receivable transactions of the University.
The purpose of the collections unit within Business Financial Services (BFS) is to establish and maintain mutually supportive relationships between the University and its students, alumni, faculty, staff and commercial clients. This unit provides counseling, planning, debt management, financial and account resolution on sensitive issues.
Description of Job
The purpose of this position is to determine solutions to obtain payment or prevent default on delinquent student and commercial accounts by studying and analyzing the entire account history and debtor records and information and applying the most appropriate collections practice, standard, rule, regulation, method, technique or procedure. Work involves informing and advising the debtor of obligations, policies, and regulations about loans and debts and the consequences of non-payment by setting up payment plans, sending out collection letters, reviewing accounts that must be sent to external collection agencies, skip-tracing to locate debtors, and working with the BFS staff and other campus departments to resolve accounts. This position is largely self-directed and works with limited direction and assistance in performing the full range of collections work while maintaining computerized debtor records, documenting collection activity, and determining a debtor's ability to pay and account disposition.

Primary Duties:
Collection Attempts
Inform and advise debtors of obligations, policies, and regulations about loans and debts and the consequences of non-payment.
collect debts by recommending liens and garnishments.
maintain computerized debtor records: document collection activity, determine a debtor's ability to pay and account disposition.
Select the most cost-effective collections alternative to locate the persons and obtain payment or prevent default on obligations by applying the full range of established collections practices, standards, rules, regulations, methods, techniques, or procedures.
Collection Assignments
Study and analyze collection records, debtor records and information to determine what it means and how it fits together in order to get practical solutions in the form of payment plans and schedules for prevention of defaults.
Locate and select the most appropriate guidelines, collections practice, standard, rule, regulation, method, technique, or procedure depending on the given collections circumstances of the situation, which may change for varying collections circumstances on evaluation and interpretation of the circumstances of the individual collection case to be resolved.
Customer Service
Acts as a mediator and liaison between customers and other University departments in resolving student and commercial billing problems.
Provides customer service support for University staff and customers by disseminating and/or gathering information via research or contact.
If an account needs to be reconciled, the account is returned to BFS for analysis.
Other Duties as Assigned
Explain work processes and train employees to make collection attempts.
Serve as a resource and guide by advising others on how to use processes in the Banner system.
Collaborate and problem-solve with Business Financial Services team.
Other Duties as assigned.
Salary Range:
$3,484.00 - $4,878.00 Monthly
