About Chemical Engineer 3 - Waste Management Program

  The Chemical Engineer reports to the Waste Management Program Supervisor and Subject Matter Expert (SME). The position supports daily operations and activities associated with waste generation and management of chemical, radioactive, and mixed waste characterization data, tools, techniques, and documentation.

  This position shall be performed under the day-to-day direction, control, and supervision of WTCC

  MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES/TASKS

  Provide detailed and accurate chemical, radioactive, and mixed waste characterization data for waste designation, waste packaging and transportation, and waste disposal

  Review and reconcile characterization data

  Develop and maintain knowledge of radioactive waste management requirements found in DOE M 435.1-1, Radioactive Waste Management Manual

  Develop and maintain knowledge of environmental regulations, RCRA regulations, Washington State Dangerous Waste regulations (WAC 173-303), permit requirements, and applicable waste acceptance criteria

  Provide technical support services to the Waste Management organization for management of chemical, radioactive, and mixed waste-generating activities

  Assists the Waste Management Program Supervisor in development and execution of effective chemical, radioactive, and mixed waste characterization strategies and tools

  Prepare sampling and analysis plans for liquid and solid waste matrices and establish data quality objectives

  Develop or support development and maintenance of waste management computational spreadsheets, including development and peer review of MicroShield® calculations and Excel® calculation spreadsheets

  Support development and peer review of spreadsheets, engineering reports and documentation in accordance with established procedures, including satisfactory disposition and resolution of comments submitted by others

  Preparation of clear, concise, error-free engineering reports and documentation, spreadsheets, or other work products

  Support development and maintenance of Waste Management program plans and procedures

  Interfaces with other organizations in support of waste characterization activities and methodologies, including laboratory personnel, Plant Engineering, and Process Engineering organizations

  Develop and maintain working knowledge of applicable waste simulation and composition modeling tools and techniques, and interpret modeling tool outputs for waste characterization and waste designation

  Review and complete corrective actions

  Demonstrate creative ability in solving technical problems

  Support the Waste Treatment Plant Nuclear Safety Quality Culture by emphasizing the values of safety and quality in the performance of work in order to protect self, other personnel, facilities, and the environment

  Perform all work in compliance with environmental permits and regulations

  REQUIREMENTS/SPECIFICATIONS

  Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering, or related engineering discipline.

  Experience:

  Minimum of seven years of professional experience, which include a minimum of three (3) years at a nuclear facility in areas of chemical, radioactive and mixed waste characterization.

  Strong organizational and planning skills required, including the ability to prioritize workloads.

  Experience in sample analysis and development of data quality objectives, waste simulation and composition modeling tools and techniques, and interpretation of modeling tool outputs for waste characterization and waste designation.

  Microsoft Office experience with advanced capabilities, primarily in Excel®.

  Excellent technical writing/editing and verbal communication skills

  Preferred Experience:

  Previous experience with chemical waste characterization, radioactive waste characterization, mixed waste characterization, treatment, packaging, transportation, and disposal of waste generated at Department of Energy nuclear facilities.

  A working knowledge of Conduct of Operations is desirable.

  Previous experience with laboratory practices, interpretation of analytical data, sample analysis, development of data quality objectives, and waste simulation and composition modeling data for purposes of determining waste disposition, waste forecasting, waste designation, planning, treatment, disposal, and waste profile development.

  Prior experience with Hanford Site Waste Acceptance Criteria or relevant waste acceptance criteria from other Department of Energy disposal facilities.

  Previous experience in development and peer review of MicroShield® calculations.

  Formal training related to radioactive, chemical, and mixed waste management, including training in DOT, RCRA, and Washington State Regulations.

  Ability to define an appropriate analytical approach to waste characterization, paths for meeting performance/acceptance criteria, and determine statistical parameters for decision making.

  PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  (EFNM) Exposed Field Non-Manual

  Performs desk work, including writing, computer workstation processes and calculations, and telephone operation. Arranges for and/or performs presentations, oral reports, planning meetings, and other formal and informal activities, requiring long periods of sitting. Oversees field activities, which requires walking, standing, bending, and turning along with wearing of personal protective equipment. Occasional loading, transport, and unloading of tools and/or supplies specific to an activity.

  This position is located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) and works a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy (DOE) badge for access to the Hanford site .

  Must be able to work in the United States without Sponsorship

  COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  HIRING SALARY RANGE: $87,988.37 - $136,835.09 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
