The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) is responsible for the sterile environment of the surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during each surgical procedure. You should have an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipate the needs of the surgeon. You must be certified as a Certified Surgical Technician (CST) and have the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure while constantly being on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. You should be able to communicate professionally, be comfortable working in a medical environment, be highly organized, have a strong customer service background, possess excellent computer and organizational skills, and embody a welcoming/friendly demeanor. Your schedule will vary, dependent on the operational hours of the surgical center.
You must have the flexibility to work within these hours of operation, including occasional weekends, early mornings, or late evenings as needed.
Job Duties & Essential Functions:
Assist physician providers in the sterile surgical operating room using training techniques of the CST and under the direction of the physician
Collect, verify and ready needed supplies, equipment, instruments, medications, and solutions for each surgical procedure
Assist with draping and establishing the sterile field
Participate in the surgical site and patient verification during the timeout procedure
Secure tubing, cords and other sterile accessories
Prepare and anticipate additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies for usage during the procedure
Anticipate the surgeon needs by passing instruments and supplies during the procedure
Measure and pass medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions used during the procedure
Hold retractors or instruments as delegated by the surgeon
Sponge or suction the operative site as delegated by the surgeon
Load, cut, and manage sutures
Maintain the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure
Prepare and apply sterile dressings as needed
Loads the intra-ocular lens (IOL) for insertion
Prepare and pass off specimen as appropriate
Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization
Assist in preparing the operating room for the next procedure, ensuring a safe and efficient turnover
Assist with hooking the patient up to the monitoring devices. (EKG/Pulse Ox )
Monitor the comfort of the patient and provides verbal and tactile reassurance to the patient
Assist the anesthesia provider
Assist with positioning the patient, using the appropriate equipment and anatomical principles to avoid patient injury
Apply the electrosurgical grounding pad
Close out the room, re-stock and fill the rooms with enough surgical packs for the following days procedures
Train and function as an Instrument tech as needed
Perform quality control inspection of instruments ensuring there are no damages to the integrity
Work with the team to ensure accurate and up to date doctor preference cards
Maintain a clean and neat operating room
Special projects and other duties may be assigned as needed
Required Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent required
Current BLS certification or obtain within 6 months of employment
Certified Surgical Technician CST Certification from an accredited school
One or more years of related work experience in operating room preferred
Membership in surgical specialty society encouraged
Strong communication skills and ability to work well is a high-stress environment
Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends if needed
Above average customer service skills and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations
Preferred Qualifications:
Bilingual in English and Spanish or ability to speak other languages is desirablePay Range: $32.00 - $35.00/hour based on experience
