Summary This position is located within the Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS), Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) with one vacancy located in Pascagoula, MS. Responsibilities As a Biological Science Technician (Fisheries), you will perform the following duties: Participate in analytic and field-based research focused on Southeast Fisheries Science Center priorities to support population assessment of living marine resources, predominantly within the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. Research topics include fish and invertebrate habitat utilization patterns, diet, life history, distribution, and abundance. Provide support for bottom trawl surveys in the Gulf of Mexico for the Trawl and Plankton Branch. Perform all aspects of trawl survey preparation and post-cruise efforts, including supply procurement, administrative tasks, preparation of cruise instructions and cruise reports, and loading and unloading equipment for each survey. Perform data management for the Trawl and Plankton Branch bottom trawl unit. Maintain and update databases related to the bottom trawl survey and associated sampling and research efforts. Requirements Conditions of Employment This position will be filled under the DOC Alternative Personnel System (CAPS). This system replaced the Federal GS pay plan and structure. Under CAPS, positions are classified by career, pay plan, and pay band. The ZT-3 is equivalent to the GS-9. Key Requirements: Applicants must be U.S. Citizens. Qualifications PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: This position has physical requirements. The incumbent will be expected to spend 60-90 days per year at sea and must be able to stand for long periods of time, ascend and descend ladders, lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: The incumbent must be able to work on research vessels in offshore waters during multi-day sampling trips, and work in potentially harsh weather conditions on uneven surfaces.
