At Sonos we want to create the ultimate listening experience for our customers and know that it starts by listening to each other. As part of the Sonos team, you’ll collaborate with people of all styles, skill sets, and backgrounds to realize our vision while fostering a community where everyone feels included and empowered to do the best work of their lives.
Audio technology research at Sonos sits at the intersection of audio signal processing, machine learning, acoustics, and audio perception. We research and develop technologies that enable new and unique listening experiences from Sonos products.
We are looking for an Audio Hardware Research Scientist to join our sensing research team in London and help us build the listening experiences of the future.
What you’ll do
Advanced technologies play a central role in the future of the Sonos sound experience, covering a range of research areas including spatial audio, adaptive noise cancellation, telephony, wearable computing, and sensing.
As an Audio Hardware Research Scientist, you will be responsible for researching, developing, and evaluating sensing, signal processing, and machine learning algorithms and methods. This will include identifying the emerging opportunities presented by new methods and developments in the field and taking ideas from early concepts to scalable, productisable solutions.
Basic Qualifications
Research shows that candidates from underrepresented backgrounds often don't apply for roles if they don't meet all the criteria. If you don’t have 100% of the skills listed, we strongly encourage you to apply if interested.
Ability to formalize, analyze and solve complex problems.
Demonstrable expertise and research experience in one or more of the following areas:
Sensor processing, sensor fusion
Mobile and wearable computing
Context awareness
Brain-computer interaction
Sensing for audio
Spatial computing
Personalized, adaptive audio rendering
Ph.D. in audio, covering one of the above areas or a related topic.
Knowledge of fundamental DSP and ML techniques for sensing and sensor fusion (e.g. state estimation, data pre-processing and modeling).
Comfortable working with and/or designing prototype hardware systems
Comfortable using Python or Matlab, and version control tools.
Ability to clearly communicate, present, and disseminate research findings to both specialist and general audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
Musical and/or critical listening background (playing, producing, engineering).
Track record of published papers in relevant peer-reviewed journals or conferences (e.g. ICML, SENSORS, UIST, CHI, CVPR, Ubicomp, MobiCom, ICASSP, Interspeech).
Your profile will be reviewed and you'll hear from us once we have an update. At Sonos we take the time to hire right and appreciate your patience.
Sonos is a sound experience company. We connect millions of listeners all around the world to the content they want, where and how they want it. Since inventing multiroom wireless audio in 2005, we have continuously innovated the listening experience, designing hardware and software that celebrates sound, empowers our customers, and brings the home to life. Our team is made up of passionate players united by a culture of respect, transparency, collaboration, and ownership who want to inspire the world to listen better.
Having been distributed from the start, we’ve long since been accustomed to having close teammates in entirely different locations and time zones. We ground ourselves in these four principles while working as distributed teams:
Role Location: Some roles require an office while others may be done remotely. Leaders make this decision based on business rationale, role requirements and team needs.
Travel: Some work is better done in person. Teams should meet together in person at critical moments to move work forward.
Meeting Norms: We use our time to drive OKRs and run the business. We normalize asynchronous collaboration and focused work. We give feedback and help each other improve when norms are not followed.
Flexibility: Flexibility done well fuels impact, not hinders it. Teams flex to support one another and employees flex to deliver for the team or business. We flex both ways to drive impact.
