GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Department of Health is seeking a dedicated professional to serve as the Drug Overdose Surveillance and Epidemiology (DOSE) Epidemiologist. This position is an At-Will Employee Contract (AWEC) position. This position reports to the Substance Abuse Prevention Epidemiologist and will collect, analyze, and disseminate timely data from emergency departments, including syndromic surveillance data, on suspected overdoses. The DOSE Epidemiologist will also analyze other datasets concerning overdose and substance use, including Emergency Medical Services data, laboratory biosurveillance data, and other data sources that may be identified. This position will identify epidemiologic trends in non-fatal overdose data, including substances involved and populations disproportionately affected, to critically inform overdose prevention efforts in Wyoming. The DOSE epidemiologist will collaborate with other epidemiologists, prevention experts, external partners, and the public to share data and inform prevention efforts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.
Collect, analyze, and report Wyoming emergency department syndromic overdose data and emergency department discharge data at grant-required frequencies (typically monthly).
Produce and disseminate data products related to emergency department overdose data at a frequency meeting, at minimum, grant requirements.
Communicate with internal and external partners and the public regarding emergency department overdose data.
Coordinate with internal and external partners to improve the quality of emergency department overdose data.
Collect, analyze, and disseminate EMS overdose data, biosurveillance data, and other overdose- and substance use-related data.
Coordinate with internal and external partners to apply data to inform prevention efforts.
Participate in grant writing and reporting related to overdose.
Attend training related to job duties both in Wyoming and other states.
Participate in the division’s response to public health events as needed.
Qualifications
PREFERENCES:
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in public health epidemiology and a Master’s degree in public health, epidemiology, or closely related field.
KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of epidemiologic surveillance
Ability to carry out epidemiologic and statistical analysis
Ability to use results of analyses to help formulate prevention and control decisions
Ability to use software to conduct epidemiologic analyses
Ability to communicate data to a variety of audiences, including through written, oral, and website communication
Ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to address epidemiologic problems
