This position will be the administrative officer for the Senior Vice President of Finance and Operations (SVPFO) for strategic initiatives requiring institutional coordination, effort, and support. The AVP of Strategic Initiatives will serve as a central point of contact on behalf of regional partners on strategic initiatives where the University will have a role. This position will play a pivotal role in ensuring the university engages opportunities aligned with its long-term objectives and aspirations. With a keen eye for innovative solutions and a deep understanding of the dynamic landscape of higher education as well as state and regional ecosystems, the AVP will be instrumental in developing and implementing comprehensive strategies that drive institutional excellence. The AVP advises the SVPFO and University leadership. The AVP will be the SVP's primary officer on behalf of external partners where the University has a vested interest in mission success. In this role, the position will be an integral partner and advisor on the (i) development of the state and regional infrastructure and policy in a manner that supports research, innovation, and workforce development for the UMN System (ii) creation of economic development and innovation ecosystems within the state and region among University affiliates, startup and established companies, other private sector partners, economic development and industry agencies (such as GreaterMSP, Minnesota DEED and Medical Alley), government agencies, and community organizations. The AVP must have a background in strategy development and implementation, scientific research, and translation and must have strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship building skills to ensure initiatives are not only visionary but also grounded in practical, achievable goals Key Responsibilities The Associate Vice President of Strategic Initiatives reports to the Senior Vice President of Finance and Operations supporting system-wide engagement for strategic initiatives and regional ecosystem development for the University. Additionally, this position will serve as the SVP's Strategic Officer on behalf of external partners in support of state and regional strategic initiatives and ecosystem development activities while reporting directly to the external partners. The responsibilities for this position include: Strategic Officer on Behalf of External Partners (50%) Coordinate and engage UMN units in support of regional projects, on behalf of external partners. Develop and facilitate strategic plans for the development, implementation, and operation of regional projects. Develop strategies to connect regional projects and partners with the University, to drive "place-based innovation" and enable the ecosystem to improve our region's competitiveness at the direction of external partners as their representative (advocate). Advise on policies and regulations (such as national security [classification] and laboratory requirements) that might affect the physical development of regional infrastructure. Liaise with governments, industry organizations, civic groups, and others to be determined to drive the innovation ecosystem within the region and its impact on Minnesota's innovation ecosystem. Support the development of programming communications and marketing materials around impactful place-based innovation. Lead and Coordinate Strategic Initiatives and Ecosystem Development Activities (35%) Organize, assess, and coordinate requests to the SVP's Office or other senior leaders (as requested) for UMN engagement in support of regional ecosystem development efforts. Support egional ecosystem development partners and efforts (e.g., economic development, grants) representing the scope and breadth of UMN as a regional partner. Identify, engage, and coordinate UMN units in ecosystem development opportunities ensuring networked UMN expertise and resources. Develop and implement effective systems and processes to increase awareness, assessment, and engagement of UMN wide engagement in ecosystem development opportunities. Participate in UMN working groups (e.g. Innovation Corridor Working Group), committees, and initiatives designed to advance the translation of innovation and economic and workforce development. Conduct Strategy Planning and Assessment (15%) Conduct strategic planning for SVPFO on ecosystem development projects and partnerships. Assess and analyze new opportunities for alignment with institutional priorities and capabilities. Identify strategic risks. Qualifications: * Graduate or professional degree required. Ph.D. in a related field is preferred. * Extensive experience at the University of Minnesota. * Experience working with both internal University of Minnesota governance as well as members of the State of Minnesota Legislature. * The position requires sound policy judgment and proven skills in working effectively with faculty, staff, students, and external agencies. * Additionally, preference will be given to those with cross-departmental or cross-disciplinary experience, an outstanding record of research funding, successful administrative and leadership experience, experience on research related committees, and a background that complements that of other executive staff.
