The primary purpose of the Associate Database Administrator position is to assist both the DBA and Sr. DBA in supporting to the database management systems being utilized in the institution. Install, configure, patch, and upgrade the database server software and related products.
Provide assistance in working with application team in building and implementing the required database environment. Familiarize in gathering required information and develop database design based on application requirements and apply them during implementation or system upgrade.
Work under the supervision of DBA in ensuring that the databases are running smoothly 24/7 by implementing the appropriate high availability solutions required by the application, develop backup/restore strategy to minimize data loss and quick recovery, ensure security permissions are assigned correctly, and proactively monitor and troubleshoot issue affecting the database server by implementing required changes.
Get acquainted with the software tools, methodologies, standards and best practices endorsed by the team.
Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation or be available for on-call support during off-work hours.
Ideal candidates will have experience managing Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL and/or MongoDB
System implementation and support
Provide support in Installing, configuring, testing, and managing the databases in accordance to vendor, project and institutional specifications and standards.
Utilize the appropriate DBMS software and version that is suitable for users' requirements.
Help in configuring the database security policies to only allow data owners and approved users access the database.
Provide assistance in supporting the databases or systems that they were involved and implemented.
Assist in installing the latest database software patch to address security vulnerabilities and software defects.
Learn the software tools utilized by the team and use them to their fullest potential.
Assimilate the organizations privacy regulations regarding PHI and PCI.
Database Design
Provide assistance in gathering required information to develop database design based on application requirements and apply them during implementation or system upgrade.
Implement the recommended High Availability and Disaster Recovery solution provided by team lead.
Configure the backup and recovery strategy based on Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) required by the data owners.
Assist in configuring the centralized database backup tool in implementing backup, log shipping and restore strategies.
Monitoring and Troubleshooting
Assist in monitoring and troubleshooting database related issues. Applies database updates and patches as needed.
Assist in monitoring the databases using the centralized monitoring software used by the team.
Helps in ensuring the threshold and alerts are configured accordingly to send out the appropriate notification to the team, on-call pager and/or primary support.
Respond to issues reported by users in a timely manner.
Aid other DBAs in fine-tuning and optimizing the database configurations and slow data queries reported by users.
Provide assistance in proactively monitor the warnings and address them accordingly before they escalate.
On-call
Participate in the on-call rotation to providing support during off-work hours.
Respond to on-call notification (pager) within the time defined in policies and procedure.
Respond to call from on-call personnel and assist in investigating the issues on the systems that you are the assigned as primary support.
System standardization
Learn and apply the standards and best practices for various database operation.
Assist in documenting the standards and best practices.
Follow and implement the documented policies, procedures and checklists
Assist in reviewing, revising and acknowledging the documented policies, procedures and checklists annually.

Education Required: Bachelor's degree.
Preferred Education: Master's degree
Certification Required: None
Preferred Certification: Microsoft SQL Server DBA certification
Experience Required: Two years of experience with database installation, programming and maintenance. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one-to-one basis. With preferred degree, no experience required.
Preferred Experience: Experience with Microsoft SQL Server Clustering. Azure, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB administration experience.
