  ITFSE) within the Watson College of Education at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (

  UNCW), seeks an outstanding faculty member for an Assistant or Associate, nine-month tenure-track position in Secondary Education - Social Studies beginning August 2024.

  The department has a diverse group of faculty from different racial, ethnic, religious, and philosophical backgrounds. This diversity inspires our creativity and allows us to embrace multiple perspectives, and to productively work together across those differences. Our faculty members are active researchers and dedicated teachers with an incredible commitment to providing high quality, rigorous academic programs that have a positive impact on the community. We are seeking a colleague who shares that commitment and has the potential for excellence in research and teaching.

  Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate courses (9-12) in Social Studies Education, supervision of secondary social studies candidates in field experiences/internship, and other teaching responsibilities related to Secondary Education. Additional responsibilities may include collaborating with colleagues to maintain and grow our secondary licensure programs; collaborating with campus, community, and state education partners through community-engaged scholarship and professional development; advising students in the secondary program; and participating in program development and accreditation processes.

  Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  Applicants for this position must hold a terminal degree in social studies education, or a closely related field (e.g., social/cultural foundations, secondary education, educational leadership) with a concentration in social studies.

  ABD candidates may be considered depending on the expected completion date.Minimum of 3 years social studies teaching experience in middle or high school.Promising research agenda related to social studies education.

  Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  Demonstrated evidence of ways research, teaching, and service contribute to building and sustaining equitable and inclusive communities.Experience teaching Social Studies Methods or Methods equivalent at university level.Evidence of successful pre-service teacher supervision and knowledge of edTPA and the Candidate Preservice Assessment of Student Teaching (

  CPAST) assessment tool.Experience teaching in multiple modalities.

  The Department of Instructional Technology, Foundations, and Secondary Education prepares educators/professionals for leadership positions in instructional technology and secondary education. Our commitment is to the development of highly competent professionals to serve in educational leadership roles. The Secondary Education Program prepares students to teach high school (9th-12th grade) in a variety of education settings, including traditional high schools, and small "alternative" high schools in urban, suburban, and rural environments.   MAT program options for students seeking high schoolteacher licensure in the core subjects of English, mathematics, science, and social studies.The Secondary Education program has several distinctive features: Small class sizes offering p rsonal attention and guidance; Extensive field experiences integrated throughout the program; Excellent relationships with public school teachers and schools; Dedicated secondary faculty; Opportunities for international experiences. Programs leading to teacher licensure are offered in the fields of biology, chemistry, geology, English, anthropology, history, sociology, political science, and mathematics.
