CMSS) within the Division of Student Affairs at James Madison University invites applications for the position of Assistant Director for Multicultural Programs. This position resides within the Division of Student Affairs.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Director plays a critical role on a team focused on strengthening advocacy and support for multicultural, multiethnic students and marginalized communities on campus. This position leads the continual development of diverse and intersectional programming that supports and carries out the mission, goals and inclusion initiatives for the department and university. In situations not specifically addressed by policies and procedures, decision-making is in alignment with the highest professional and ethical standards aligning with student affairs mission and values.The Assistant Director will lead and oversee all aspects of the Diversity Education Empowerment Program (D.E.E.P. Impact) along with managing budget and other resources according to university and State policies. Responsibilities for the program include hosting monthly campus dialogues, quarterly cultural series events, responding to outreach requests and collaborating with other campus and community partners. Designing and presenting inclusive programing for students based on current and relevant topics such as social justice, accessibility, belonging, intersectionality, and racial equity.The Assistant Director has direct supervision and responsibility for the recruitment, hiring and selection process of up to ten paid undergraduate D.E.E.P. Impact student facilitators along with one Graduate Assistant and volunteer student staff throughout the academic year. Supervision includes week y staff meetings, training, coaching and mentoring along with the submission of timesheets.The Assistant Director serves as a faculty liaison connected to teaching and curriculum development for an academic course. The Assistant Director will co-teach a 3-credit
HRD 123 course: Developing Multicultural Competency for Effective Facilitation, in partnership with the College of Education.The Assistant Director leads content development and strategy to create curricular discussion and engagement that will enhance the co-curricular opportunities provided by the
DEEP staff to the campus community.Manages assessment for the Diversity Education Empowerment Program (D.E.E.P. Impact) which includes completing annual reports, creating learning outcomes and effective program strategy based on best practice and assessment data. The Assistant Director should evaluate and assess which co-curricular programs are relevant and impactful to student diversity and sense of belonging.The Assistant Director will assist with and collaborate on annual departmental programs and initiatives such as the
MLK week of events, student travel to multicultural conferences, and travel sponsored by the department such as Experiential Learning trips.Develops and facilitates
DEI trainings and presentations in alignment with the department, division and university mission, vision, and values in various aspects of diversity, equity, inclusion. The AD will serve as the departmental liaison to the campus community for
DEI training and development which includes providing at least 2-3 opportunities a semester, content development and delivery, and provides consultation to campus constituents. Participates and represents the department in admissions recruitment initiatives for prospective students such as overnight at Madison and transition student events such as orientation.
Qualifications
Required:
A master's degree in college student personnel administration or relevant fieldKnowledge of issues relating to historically underrepresented and marginalized communitiesExcellent written, verbal, interpersonal, supervisory and organizational skills, along with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups of peopleExperience with student development and group facilitationPreferred:
3-5 years experience working with diverse populations in a collegiate settingTeaching experience and training in diversity education in the areas of diversity, social justice, identity development, psychology, gender/queer studies, or other related areasExperience with workshop facilitation and advising student organizationsThe ability to coordinate large-scale events such as conferencesKnowledge of assessment as it relates to student learning and developmentExperience budgeting and organizing group travel logisticsConditions of Employment
