The primary purpose of this position is to inspect, repair, maintain, adjust, troubleshoot, modify, and perform final functional and operational tests on a variety of major aircraft systems, and components such as airframe, landing gear, power plant, hydraulic, pressurizations, utility, fuel, oil, canopy and flight control systems on T-1, T6, T-37, T-38 and T-43 aircraft. Responsibilities DUTY 1: Performs troubleshooting on a variety of major aircraft systems, their assemblies, and components. DUTY 2: Disassembles, repairs, and reassembles major aircraft systems, their assemblies, and components. DUTY 3: Performs aircraft scheduled and unscheduled aircraft/systems inspections (e.g., Phase 1-4, ISO, Major, Minor, hourly post flight (HPO), Preflight, Thru Flight, Basic Post Flight, Time Compliance Technical Order). DUTY 4: Performs flightline and ground handling operations. Establishes and maintains good working relationships. DUTY 5: Utilizes safety practices and procedures and controls tools. Accomplishes operational and maintenance record keeping, both manual and automated, associated with aircraft maintenance and repair. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8800 Aircraft Overhaul Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is ability to do the work of a AIRCRAFT MECHANIC without more than normal supervision. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Heavy lifting (40 pounds), Moderate carrying (15 44 lbs). Hours of straight pulling are 1 hr/day. Hours of pulling hand over hand are 1 hr per day, one hour pushing per day, reaching above shoulder. Use of fingers, Both hand required. Five hours walking per day, five hours standing per day, three hours crawling per day, three hours kneeling per day, three hours repeated bending per day, three hours of climbing, leg only, per day climbing, use of arms and legs, both legs required. Operation of crane, truck, tractor or motor vehicle. Ability for mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Near vision correctable (0 13 inches to 26 inches to jaeger 1 to 4 specific vision requirement. Cannot be color blind to colors use for runaway operations (R, W, D) both eyes required, depth perception. Ability to distinguish basic colors. Ability to distinguish shades of colors, hearing aid permitted. Annual hearing test if it cannot be otherwise accommodated, a specifics physical condition or impairment will not automatically disqualify a candidate. Working Conditions: Work is performed in hanger areas, outdoors, in parked aircraft, and sometimes in hazardous noise areas. Exposed to extremes in heat, cold, and inclement, weather. Must work in confined areas and in awkward positions. Exposed to dirt, grease, and aircraft fluids, oil, hydraulic fluids, solvents, and hazardous fluids and gases such as hydrazine and Halon. Subject to cuts, bruises, muscle strain, and injury from falls of scaffolds, ladders, and aircraft surfaces. May be exposed to intake suction and hot exhaust blast. Working closely with others and alone. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of the T-1 or T-6, T-37, T-38, or T-43 aircraft makeup, operation, installation, and adjustment of a variety of major interrelated and/or integrated aircraft systems, subsystems, and assemblies, such as fuel and hydraulic systems, flight control systems, instrumentation systems, engines, landing gear assemblies, airframe, and control surfaces. Skill in selecting and using standard and specialized tools and test equipment including fixtures, templates, scales, test stand, and external power sources. Ability to remove and install a variety of aircraft parts, accessories, components in proper sequence. One (1) year in at least three (3) years performing as aircraft mechanic on T-1, or T-6, T-37, T-38, or T-43 aircraft is highly desirable. 2. Comprehensive knowledge of a wide variety of parts, components, subsystems, and assemblies such as jet engine, hydraulic, electrical, ejections seats, canopy and landing gear systems, or similar self-contained systems. Ability to rig, function test, or troubleshoot systems, determine when they are operating properly or whether portions of the system should be repaired or replaced, and the type and extent of adjustment and alignment needed. Knowledge of aircraft ground functional test procedures including engine run up test and monitoring. Skill in reading and understanding data and settings from cockpit instruments and gauges. Ability to read and interpret instructions, specifications and a variety of technical data such as schematic diagrams, blue prints, technical orders, etc. to troubleshoot and repair various systems malfunctions. Knowledge of supply procedures, the publication order system, and documentation procedures. Ability to performs as Task Oriented Trainer (TOT) to provide FTD (type training to other personnel. 3. Knowledge of Red X inspection procedures for assigned aircraft and the ability to evaluate work, which has placed aircraft in Red X status. 4. Aircraft ground handling knowledge to include proper-tower radio operations and procedures; towing characteristics of assigned aircraft including landing gear safety pins, wing locks, braking systems and tying-down and grounding methods, procedures for safety refueling and de-fueling aircraft and the ability to safety refuel and de-fuel aircraft. Ability to operate 20-ton crane and crash recovery equipment to safely remove damaged aircraft from active runways an airfield areas. 5. Knowledge of safety requirements as outlined in applicable standards, regulations, tech orders and other guideline. Knowledge of tool, equipment, materials accounting, and procedures. 6. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, make legible entries on maintenance related documents, and to use computer terminals to maintain records and document actions. Ability to maintain and perform in a fast paced high tempo environment under noisy and sometimes vey warm conditions and to work and interact with others in a business like manner. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
