Department Information:
The Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM) is one of 12 basic science departments in the School of Medicine. DCM is the central laboratory animal medicine resource at the University of Washington, supporting over 114,000 assignable square feet of animal facilities with an average daily census in excess of 100,000 animals across multiple species (e.g., rodents, rabbits, swine, and zebrafish). The department employs over 175 individuals who provide a comprehensive range of animal husbandry, veterinary, and laboratory services across numerous vivaria. The UW animal care program is accredited by AAALAC International and provides services to over 400 principal investigators. DCM faculty members, post-doctoral fellows, and residents conduct basic and clinical research on a wide range of subjects including, but not limited to, comparative aspects of infectious disease, aging, cancer biology and genetics.

The Histology and Imaging Core in the Department of Comparative Medicine is seeking a full-time Research Scientist/Engineer 4. This position will provide research support for and operational oversight of a Shared Research Resource, The Histology and Imaging Core (HIC). This resource consistently offers low-cost and efficient pre-analytic processing of research tissues for histology, immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization and imaging. The Histology and Imaging core also provides analysis of tissues processed in the core, including whole slide quantitative image analysis using Visiopharm analysis software.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Management and Oversight of the Histology and Imaging Core = 50% • Initiate, plan, and execute the development of processes and capabilities that optimize the delivery of a broad range of research pathology services to internal and external customers:• Comprehensive histology service ranging from routine processes to specialized, custom solutions.• Robust, high throughput immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization and fluorescent multiplex assay service.• Oversee a large library of 100 optimized and validated IHC targets.• Assist with the design and validation of customizable IHC/ISH solutions to fit project needs.• Assist with the digital pathology service including bright field and fluorescent slide imaging platforms, high throughput whole slide imaging and quantitative digital pathology.• Work with two board certified veterinary pathologists to assist with the oversight of veterinary pathology consultation services offered to clients of the HIC.
Serve as the point of contact for program and project specific information including progress and data reporting to clients and leadership through all phases of a given project = 20% • Ensure client satisfaction through coordinated communication, problem solving and aligning deliverables with project goals.• Assist with quality control in the HIC through microscopic review of stained slides generated in the core.• Coordination of delivery and retrieval of project related materials with primary stakeholders.
Oversight of image analysis protocol development offered through whole slide digital imaging and the Visiopharm software platform = 10% Assist with the cores budget, including forecasting and expenditure reporting =10% • Assist with the development of cost center rates and perform annual rate review.• Meet every other month with department administrator and chair to review reported revenue.• Oversee all billing and invoicing for any project serviced in the core.
Supervision of three staff members =10% • Supervise and assist in the evaluation of three staff (two FTE and one part time position).• Assist with identifying professional development and training opportunities for all staff.• Meet weekly with the core directors and supervised staff.• Work to create a team atmosphere.• Encourage collaboration, community development and team building to support program staff and trainees during their education.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Master’s degree in a related field and four years of relevant experience,OREquivalent combination of education/experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS • Experience with in-situ hybridization.• Experience with whole slide imaging, stereology, and image analysis.• Experience with cryosectioning• Four to six years of experience in research pathology in an academic or biotechnology setting. Experience in both settings is considered an advantage.• Experience with high quality pre-analytics including tissue processing, fixation, embedding, and sectioning of animal tissues.• Experience with the use of histochemistry and immunohistochemistry techniques in animal and human tissues
