UC's annual budget tops $1.65 billion and its endowment totals $1.8 billion.Job OverviewThe Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow researcher to work on a project involving advanced quantitative characterization of microstructure evolution during materials processing.Essential FunctionsApply techniques for quantitative microstructure characterization to iron-based alloys given different heat treatments.Synthesize metal specimens using vacuum arc melting.Assist with setting up and maintaining laboratory equipment.Participate in weekly meetings and prepare presentation materials communicating research results.Contribute to guiding graduate students in characterization and analysis of metallic specimens in multiple alloy systems.Assist with experiments involving surface modifications on metallic specimens using laser shock peening, oxidation behavior, and thermophysical property characterization.Write code in Python and Matlab for analyzing data.Perform related duties based on departmental need. This job description can be changed at any time.Required EducationPrior to the effective date of appointment, a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering.Required ExperienceExpertise in physical metallurgy and characterization of processing-structure-property relationships in metallic materials.Experience in scanning electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, X-ray diffraction, Gleeble thermomechanical testing, metallographic specimen preparation, electro-discharge machining.Knowledge of crystallography of phase transformations and analysis of orientation data using the MTEX toolbox in Matlab.Demonstrated ability to write scientific manuscripts in English for submission to peer-reviewed journals.Physical Requirements/Work EnvironmentOffice environment/no specific unusual physical or environmental demands.Compensation and BenefitsUC offers a wide array of complementary and affordable benefit options, to meet the financial, educational, health, and wellness needs of you and your family.
