The PhD will take place at "FEI SAS" in Mérignac near Bordeaux, part of the "Materials and Structural Analysis" division of "ThermoFisher Scientific" which is a multinational company with more than 120,000 employees and present in more than 60 countries.
We are looking for a PHD Thesis: Fast & automated defect analyst, in the context of "Enabling Industrial Applications of an Innovative additive manufactured Self-Healable Al alloy by Advanced Automated Characterization for QA", who will be participating in the following project:
-WP4 & WP5 M-ERA.NET & Aquitaine Regional Innovation Plan combined NETWORK.
-The PhD project will be integrated in the M-ERA.NET HAMAAC ( Healable Al alloys Manufacturing by Advanced Automated Characterization) network.
-The network offers in total 6 PhD positions.
-Via the required network training provided by HAMAAC, you will participate in summer schools, workshops, and scientific meetings together with top scientists and your 5 fellow PhD students in the HAMAAC network.
-You will also carry out a secondment to an industry partner and/or network partner.
-Eligibility Rules Researchers must be a doctoral candidate, not already in possession of a doctoral degree at the date of the recruitment.
Objectives:
-Detect coarse defects by optical microscopy methods.
-Detect manufacturing defects by X-ray CT.
-Develop software that will co-register different instruments and the data they collect.
-Investigate defects located by X-ray CT at higher resolution by electron microscopy.
-Adapt a Deep learning architecture, trained using the labialized data based on multi-modal acquisitions.
Expected Results:
-The aim will be to develop a novel “multiscale and multi-modal correlative methodology, combining optical, X-Ray and electronic imaging to locate and probe , both manufacturing & after-healing-process defects in Healable Al alloys, providing a rich picture of their character across a wide range of length scales.
-The Fellow will develop the AVIZO/ATHENA software environment for in-line digital integration of the correlative approach, allowing a fast and automated quality control of healable Al Alloys materials systems.
Planned secondment(s):
Host, supervisor, timing & Length University of Louvain-La-Neuve, Belgium, Prof Aude Sumar, M3-4 & M24-26, a total of 3 months.
Prerequisite for the field of activity:
MSc. In one of the following fields:
Applied Mathematics
Theoretical and/or Computational Physics
Theoretical computing
Computational Materials Science
Preferred Prerequisites:
General knowledge of X-ray physics
Knowledge of image and signal processing
Knowledge of Python
General knowledge of micro service and .NET
Knowledge of C ++ and/or C#
General knowledge of software architecture
General knowledge of artificial intelligence and deep learning algorithms and platforms
It is offered a fixed term contract.
The Gross Salary per month will be 2750€, which will be subject to French social contributions as well as the income tax. The duration of the PhD will be 36 months, with short trips and stays to Belgium and the Czech Republic.
As part of the HAMAAC European Funded Project approved by our teamwork commitee, we have received a grant for hiring a PhD student for a period of 3 years. The grant covers 100% of the costs of the PhD including salary, travel and experimentation.
