Summary This position is located in United States Coast Guard (USCG), Director of Operational Logistics (DOL), Facilities Engineering Department, Building & Grounds Maintenance Branch, Alameda, CA. Responsibilities The Maintenance Mechanic performs a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds and related structures, fixtures, and utilities. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Plumbing/Pipefitting: Using tools and equipment such as plumb bobs, mercury gauges, dividers, closet augers, hydrostatic pumps, and lead pots. Repairing equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers. The work involved installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems. Installing equipment by completing the routing and placement of systems leading to the equipment, and seating, hooking up, and testing the equipment. Determining and installing valves, traps, and unions needed for proper operation systems. Installing, modifying, and repairing systems by locating and tapping main lines, setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper level and scope. Carpentry: Using a wide variety of specialty carpentry machines and tools accomplish specialized carpentry tasks such as cutting bevels, chamfers, dados, milter joints, laminating, and the bending of wood. Operating and using carpentry tools by setting up, adjusting, and maintaining tools to meet required specifications. Setting up the tools and adapting them to make certain cuts, moldings, etc. Planning, measures, and lays out carpentry materials by interpreting complex or incomplete instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes. Planning, measures, and lays out carpentry materials using advanced shop mathematics for complex and exacting projects, such as arcs/circles and tangents for shipboard applications, windows, and molding applications. Painting: Responsible for preparing and painting various wood, metal, plastic and masonry surfaces or objects involving a variety of painting methods and a high degree of skill. Paints and finishes wood, metal and masonry structures, building interiors, and various articles of equipment, cabinets and other difficult to paint items. Preparing metal surfaces for painting by removing grease, old paint, dirt and scale. Cleaning and smoothing surfaces with sandpaper, emery cloth, wire brushes and sand blasting. Preparing wood, masonry, and plaster surfaces by removing old paint with solvents and scrapers. Preparing surfaces for coating in accordance with the Coatings and Color Manual (COMTINST M10360.3 series). Fills cracks and holes with tape, patching plaster, putty or other compounds. Washing and sanding surfaces as necessary and treating them with oil, turpentine or other preparations. Painting and rubbing filler material into open grained woods. Preparing putty and other filler materials. Other: Directly responsible for assuring that all supplies, equipment, and tools necessary for operating a buildings and grounds maintenance of an adequate stock of parts and consumables used in the performance of work tasks, which may include moving parts and consumables used in the performance of work tasks, which may include moving parts and consumables between shop space, various building, and Warehouse Shipping and Receiving. Ensuring economical usage of material and repair parts. Responsible for safe working conditions with personnel and equipment. Operating special purpose motorized equipment (i.e. forklift, backhoe, skidsteer, etc.) as needed in the completion of buildings and grounds maintenance tasks. Performs other duties as assigned. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship is required. The position requires a valid state driver's license. Applicant is required to meet the physical requirements of the position.
