The Emergency Department Technician (EDT) is a dual role of unit clerkand hands on technician. The EDT works under the supervision of aRegistered Nurse while providing care to patients in varying states ofhealth and illness during their time in the Emergency Department. TheEDT functions as an integral member of a multidisciplinary team andshould be fully versed in all areas of the Emergency Departmentoperations. The EDT must have the ability to manage multipleresponsibilities and as well as exhibit willingness and the ability tocommunicate department standards and expectations.
Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities
Demonstrates excellent customer service skills. Answers the phone in aprofessional manner identifying who they are. Greets patients andvisitors by smiling and acknowledging them within moments of theirarrival. Keeps patients and their families informed during visit,offering help and direction as needed.
Assists nurses with settling in a new patient, helping the patient intoan exam gown, obtaining vital signs, pulse oximetry measurement, height,weight, and connecting the patient to the monitor. Age-AppropriateCompetency (Child or Geriatric): Involves primary caretakers in planningand providing care.
Transports stable patients to radiology, between nursing units, to theirroom if being admitted and at discharge to personal vehicle.
Assists patients as needed in transfer in or out of a vehicle, into awheelchair, and on to a stretcher. Assists EMS with transfer of patientswhile maintaining professionalism and courtesy.
Demonstrates ability to carry out the following monitor functions: printvital signs, adjust alarms, and end case.
Demonstrates compliance with universal precautions and infection controlpractices. Reports changes in patient condition immediately to theRegistered Nurse.
Cleans rooms and used equipment using universal precaution standards.Restock rooms, carts, and fluid/blanket warmer. Restocks IV carts,empty/ change laundry/garbage bags, cleans patient stretchers withrecommended infection control solution while using universal precautiontechniques.
Assists patients with urinals, bedpans and assist to commode whilemaintaining privacy and integrity. Provides post-mortem care.
Orders supplies and equipment, maintains inventory; receives and placesitems in their proper storage area as delegated. Follows establishedcharge procedure for patient charge items. Delivers specimens asrequested.
Answers telephone takes messages and communicates to the appropriateperson. Answers call lights in a friendly and helpful manner.
Provides one-on-one supervision of patients who are at risk for injuryto others or self-harm.
At the discretion of the Registered Nurse and after completion ofrelated competencies performs EKGs, routine specimen collectionincluding, but not limited to; COVID-19, urine, sputum, feces, blood,and blood cultures.
At the discretion of a Registered Nurse, and after completion ofcompetencies, performs venipuncture for the purpose of specimencollection and establishment of saline lock. May not initiate IVtherapy, start IV fluids, or change IV bags on a patient.
Accurately documents completed treatments, measurements, and assistanceof procedures, on the patient record using current electronic healthrecord, according to department protocol. At the discretion of theRegistered Nurse, and after completion of competencies, may providebasic airway support and oxygen administration.
Responds, as assigned, as a member of the hospitals code team. Sets upfor sterile procedures and safely cleans up after a procedure usinguniversal precaution techniques.
Assists providers in the delivery of patient care and special proceduressuch as lumbar puncture, orthopedic reductions, pelvic exams, splinting,and suturing.
At the discretion of the Registered Nurse, and after completion ofrelated competencies, demonstrates the ability to effectively teachpatient appropriate crutch walking techniques, apply splints, slings,and other devices ordered by the provider.
