UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is hiring a Cytogenetics Student Intern to join our laboratory team! This will be a casual (per diem) daylight shift position, with no weekends or holidays required.
Responsibilities:
Perform specimen processing preparation and various technical procedures according to departmental policies and practices.
Perform responsibilities regarding documentation following College of American Pathology (CAP) standards by completing proper forms.
Retrieve or receive specimens, log in or accessions and perform initial specimen preparation for testing.
Obtain white cell count readings on all bone marrow and cancer blood specimens and use count to calculate the amount of specimen to be added to cultures.
Set up amniotic fluid, peripheral blood, and bone marrow specimens in culture using sterile techniques.
Exercise appropriate judgment in determining the number and type of cultures to be set up based on patient referring diagnosis and type of testing ordered.
Prepare and maintain reagents and medias.
Perform routine specimen maintenance, which includes changing media in long term cultures and subculture and freezing of specimens.
Prepare, package, and mail cultures and specimens for reference laboratory testing. Enter record of all reference laboratory testing in department database.
Perform additional laboratory functions including monitoring and ordering supplies.
Clean, maintain and monitor equipment and related instrumentation.
Perform routine Giemsa banding and staining of slides in preparation for microscope analysis.
Follow mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
Enrolled in Associate's or Bachelor's degree Biology program or related field; completed 16 semester hours in biology and 16 semester hours in chemistry; 1 semester of Microbiology is highly preferred.
Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
Analytical ability to read requisitions and laboratory testing. Interpersonal and communication skills to interact with hospital and medical staff, students, patients, and outside laboratories.
Ability to operate department computerized systems including data entry, retrieval, and report generation.
