In alignment with TRIO SSS federal grant objectives, academic advisors provide a broad scope of advising and program support services that increase educational success and retention of program participants. They are the advisor of record for CEHD students participating in the TRIO program. TRIO SSS academic advisors integrate and apply diversity, equity, and inclusivity principles within the context of student progress and development. In their work, as part of the CEHD Student Services advising team, advisors: Holistically guide, challenge, and support students in making important reflective decisions about major, personal, and career aspirations while also identifying institutional barriers that impede student progress and advocating/facilitating change. Provide educational planning, counseling, advocacy, networking, and assist students in navigating University policies, procedures and services. Work collaboratively with stakeholders and program partners from across the University of Minnesota and within the College of Education and Human Development, to inform and advance federal program objectives and to increase the 6 year graduation rate of TRIO SSS students. We seek professionals who can communicate and develop relationships effectively with faculty, students and colleagues, who can expertly advocate for students and solve problems, are flexible in responding to change and changing situations, are committed to integrating equity minded awareness into their work, functioning both independently and collaboratively. This position is based on campus. Per UMN policy, work may be done remotely when appropriate and approved by your manager. All UMN employees are expected to follow applicable public health and safety procedures The budgeted salary range for this position is offered at $50,000-54,000 for Level 3 hires and $58,000 - $62000 for level 4 hires; Salary offers are dependent on the candidate's experience, skills, and internal equity within the department. Job Responsibilities Academic Advising (55%) Both levels 3 & 4 advise a caseload of roughly 110-130 undergraduates in alignment with TRIO SSS grant service objectives. A level 3 Academic Advisor has strong mastery of academic advising skills, abilities and technology. A level 4, excels at these competencies and will contribute to the advising unit with strong advising/programmatically knowledge and/or by mentoring/training new advisors. Utilize holistic, proactive and adaptive advising strategies to guide, challenge, and support students in making important reflective decisions about major, personal, and career aspirations that encourage their academic progress while also adapting advising methods to support their individual and diverse needs. Influence retention and degree progress, supporting the program's ability to meet federal objectives, by developing strong relationships and trust with students through numerous and varying developmental contact methods across their academic lifespan. Coach students on making registration choices that promote timely and realistic degree progress balancing degree requirements and their interests. Interpret, uphold, and communicate policies established by the University of Minnesota and the college to students and faculty; influence how decisions are made, using equity minded thinking and student-centered advocacy in application of those policies. Using expert knowledge of University policies, unit procedures and practices, curriculum, and resources, help stu ents navigate the university and determine when exceptions to practices may be appropriate. Identify barriers to student degree progress and access to resources and serve as an advocate for students when those barriers are systemic or within stated policies and practices. Assist students in navigating, reviewing, understanding, securing and maintaining financial aid and scholarships as part of TRIO SSS federal program services. Support students with financial aid concerns in partnership with One Stop. Level 4 may lead financial aid and financial wellness initiatives that support this aim. Co-construct educational plans and coach students on goal setting and in implementing successful student educational strategies that include integrating careers services and its importance in the undergraduate student experience into advising interactions as well as educating and informing students about graduate school pathways. Level 4 may lead TRIO SSS focused graduate school programming and Career Services partnership. Deliver new student orientation workshops and participate in all new student orientation activities to provide a seamless, productive, welcoming entry to TRIO SSS and the college. Host group registration and advising sessions to support students. Level 4 may lead the development and coordination and evaluation of these events. Promote student engagement, community building, networking and overall belongingness. Use University information systems to maintain accurate records about student interactions. Collaborate as part of the TRIO SSS and CEHD advising teams with program stakeholders and partners to develop, coordinate and implement innovative advising interventions to proactively and reactively address student concerns. Program Development and Coordination (25%) Develop, coordinate, assess and archive TRIO SSS signature programs and initiatives as outlined in the approved grant proposal. May include chaperoning students on local/national travel. Level 4 may lead student engagement initiatives and programming; collect, analyze and summarize data to understand participant trends, inform program services to enhance retention and timely graduation. Teach 1-2 TRIO sections of EDHD 1701 (Identity, Culture and College Success). Teaching duties of the course include: delivering weekly instruction, the creation and management of a Canvas course site, evaluating and grading assignments providing clear feedback to students, and scheduling guest speakers and presenters. Participate in curriculum development and training for the EDHD 1701 course annually. Level 4 may lead curriculum development and training. Support and assist in participant recruitment and selection. Review admissions applications, assess participant eligibility and make acceptance recommendations utilizing TRIO SSS program and institutional criteria. Represent the program at campus events and activities, hold informational sessions and informational meetings.
