About Marine Camp Counselor – Babylon, NY

  This seasonal position will assist with a marine science summer camp for children ages 6-12. The camp counselor will participate as a marine educator and supervisor for campers and will help the Assistant Camp Director is to supervise a designated group of 10 campers and aid in the implementation of daily activities, including: leading children through activities indoors and outdoors during expeditions to Cedar Beach (Oceanside), be responsible for creating and teaching 1 lesson each week, seining and water activities at Cedar beach Marina, arts and crafts, and games. The counselor will prepare and breakdown daily crafts activities. Camp Counselor will lead smaller groups through the above activities and will delegate necessary tasks to CIT’s. Counselors will be responsible for preparation before programs and clean-up after programs including cleaning and care of the facility and/or marine and freshwater tanks

  Required Qualifications:

  Graduation or attendance in/from a recognized high school or equivalent.

  Experience with working with children.

  Ability to learn and lead educational experiences and activities.

  Ability to understand and carry out educational program tasks and objectives.

  Ability to work with children.

  Ability to supervise a small group of children.

  Ability to supervise CIT participants.

  Ability to understand and implement written and oral instructions.

  Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  Ability to work outdoors performing various types of educational and physical activities.

  Ability to learn marine science and natural science subject matter.

  Ability to work with and touch live animals (marine organisms, fish, reptiles, etc.).

  Ability to handle health and safety issues and/or emergency situations.

  Ability to perform physical requirements of job, (light hiking expeditions to Cedar Beach and Marina seining.)

  Ability to communicate with camp participants’ parents.

  Flexible scheduling of work week as required by ongoing operations.

  Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.

  Ability to meet acceptable background check standards, if required.

  Ability to work flexible hours.

  Preferred Qualifications:

  Desire to work with children.

  Basic marine biology, environmental or education background/aquarium and/or animal care experience.

  Current CPR/AED and/or First Aid certification or higher, or equivalent.

  Lifeguard Certifications.

  Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  Program Responsibilities:

  Program Development- 5%

  Assist the Assistant Camp Director and Camp Director with the development of learning materials, such as posters, signs, displays for lessons, fish tank set-up and fish tank maintenance.Program Delivery – 20%

  The Camp Counselor will assist with various marine and environmental science educational programs for children 6-12 years old and be responsible for creating and teaching one lesson each week to the entire group. This will include leading children through various activities both indoors and outdoors during games, learning activities, educational programming, crafts, nature walks.

  Aid in educational programming by helping the Assistant Camp Director and Camp Director with their lessons.

  Prior to that day’s planned lesson, become comfortable with and educated on lesson topics.

  Additionally, understand fully the following day’s agenda and planned lesson, craft and activities.

  Understand fully how to implement the following day’s craft.

  Understand fully how to head lead the following day’s activities.

  Program Evaluation – 5%

  Provide Camp Director with positive and negative constructive feedback regarding your perceived success of program activities, crafts and lessons.Administrative Responsibilities:

  Management – 50%

  Assist the Assistant Camp Director and Camp Director with leading CIT participants.

  Supervision of campers.

  At Cedar Beach, the Counselor will closely monitor children at all times.

  Be sure to evaluate your own success in your position and consider any changes you or the Camp Direction deem necessary or beneficial to your performance.

  Coordination/Operation – 15%

  Assist Camp Director and the Assistant Camp Director with administrative duties.

  Camp Counselors are responsible for preparation before programming and clean-up after programs including cleaning after crafts and various activities.

  Camp Counselors are responsible for facility maintenance and care including cleaning bathrooms, sweeping floors, maintaining equipment and cleaning tanks and tank filters.

  At Cedar Beach and/or the Aquarium, the Counselor will lead children on and off the bus, through lunch, during seining, and will remain in the water during non-swimming activities.

  Be present and participate in daily discussions during morning and afternoon staff meetings at Cedar Beach Marina.

  Professional Improvement - 5%

  In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.

  Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

  Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and trainings as scheduled/required.

  Pursue personal growth through expanding personal knowledge of the total organization and through updating techniques and technical skills relating to the position.

  Carry out assignments and other duties as assigned by supervisor, including but not limited to local health fairs, community activities, etc.

  Health and Safety - Applied to all duties and functions.

  Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

  Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.

  Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

  Salary Range: $12.00-$14.00 per hour (based on qualifications)
